You Are What You Believe

Bhagavad Gita 17.3

Meaning · English

Every person's faith takes the shape of their own mind, Arjun. A human being is made of faith. Whatever a person's faith is, that is exactly who they are.

Three words carry the verse. Sattva here means the inner makeup of the mind, its clarity or its cloudiness. Anurupa means conforming to, taking the shape of. Shraddha is faith, though not belief in a doctrine; it is the settled trust a person lives by and puts effort behind. Krishna says faith in everyone takes the shape of the mind it grows in. So two people can say the same words and trust very differently, because the minds holding them differ. Then he goes further. A human being is shraddha-maya, made of faith, the way a pot is made of clay. Whatever someone's faith is, that is the person. This answers Arjuna's worry in 17.1 about people who worship with faith but without the rulebook. Krishna does not rule on their rules. He points to what their faith is made of, because that shows what they are. What it asks of the listener is honest looking: what do I actually trust, and what does it say about me? Shankara reads the faith as arising from the mind's prior tendencies. Ramanuja takes the verse as describing how each person's devotion follows the quality of their nature. Madhva reads it as faith being graded by the mode that dominates the person.

A river takes the colour of the soil it runs through: red clay turns it red, black silt turns it dark. The water has no colour of its own to show. Faith is like that water, and the mind it passes through is the ground that tints it, so the colour of a person's trust shows what they are made of.

1. Tonight, take five minutes with a pen and paper. Write down three things you truly trust: not what you say you believe, but what you rely on when things go wrong. 2. Next to each, note what you do about it in an ordinary week. Time, money and attention show real faith. 3. Look at the list once, without grading it. Notice whether the trust and the actions match, and what kind of mind that trust seems to come from. 4. Keep the page and read it again in a week.

A man stands in a hospital corridor at two in the morning while his father is in surgery. He finds himself bargaining with God, then checking his phone, then reciting a prayer his mother taught him. Krishna's teaching asks him one quiet question: what is it that he is actually leaning on? His words and his leaning may differ. Step by step, the verse has him notice which thing he reached for first, see that this reaching is his faith, and accept that it says something true about who he is just now. He need not be ashamed of it or defend it. Ordinary experience agrees that what a person turns to under strain shows their character better than what they declare in calm hours. The verse is the tradition's own teaching that faith and person are one, and it is said as that teaching, not as a finding. Its limit is plain. Seeing what he trusts does not make the surgery go well, ease his fear, or replace the surgeon's work. It only lets him stand in the corridor knowing himself a little better.
