Worship Reveals Character
Bhagavad Gita 17.4
Meaning · English
Those in the mode of goodness worship the celestial gods. Those in the mode of passion worship semi-celestial beings of power and wealth, and powerful beings of sensual enjoyment, revenge and wrath. Others, in the mode of ignorance, worship ghosts and spirits.
Krishna sorts worshippers by the three modes of nature he has just named. Sattva is clarity and lightness. Rajas is restless drive, wanting and striving. Tamas is heaviness, dullness and confusion. Each mode, he says, shows in whom a person turns to. Those in sattva worship the devas, the celestial gods. Those in rajas worship the yakshas, beings who exude power and wealth, and the rakshasas, beings who embody sensual enjoyment, revenge and wrath. Those in tamas worship pretas and bhutas, ghosts and spirits. The reason lies in the verses just before: faith grows out of a person's own nature, so the object of worship mirrors what is already inside. A restless mind reaches for a power that can hand it success or strike its rivals. A dull mind drifts toward what is dim. Krishna's point is that worship is an honest mirror. It shows what a person actually leans toward, not what he says he honours. Shankara reads the verse as a way to recognise the mode of someone's faith by its object. Ramanuja takes it as carrying forward the point that a person's make-up governs the faith. Madhva likewise treats the three groups as kinds of people whose worship fits their nature.
Watch where a stranger's feet go on entering a railway station. The hungry one heads for the tea stall, the tired one for the waiting bench, the hurried one for the ticket queue. The direction of the feet tells you what each is carrying inside. Worship works the same way: whom a person turns toward shows the state he arrives in.
1. Tonight, take five minutes and list where your attention and time went today, especially in the free moments. 2. Beside each item, write one word for how it left you: clear, restless, or dull. 3. Pick one item that left you restless or dull. Tomorrow, swap ten minutes of it for something from the clear column. 4. At the end of the week, look again and notice which way your attention leans when nobody is directing it.
A man sits in his parked auto-rickshaw at the end of a long shift, thumb hovering over his phone. He could call his mother. He could watch a clip of someone being humiliated. He could open a betting app. Krishna's list asks where the hand goes when nothing forces it. Step by step: first he notices which of the three he reached for. Then he notices what each one is feeding, whether calm, appetite for a win, or anger he can enjoy. Then he sees that the choice was already a kind of worship, an offering of the evening's attention. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: what we dwell on when we are tired tends to leave us feeling the way it was. The verse does not promise that the right choice will settle his debts, his tiredness or his worry. It only names the choice as a mirror, and the text offers it as its own teaching about faith and the modes.
