Austerity Driven by Pride

Bhagavad Gita 17.5

Meaning · English

People who practise harsh austerities that the scriptures do not prescribe, possessed by hypocrisy and egotism, and driven by the force of desire and attachment.

Krishna describes a kind of austerity that goes wrong, and he gives it three marks. Tapas, the word for austerity, comes from a root meaning heat: effort that burns away slackness. Here it is ghora, stern or harsh, and it is done outside what the scriptures lay down, so it has no measure and no guide. Then come the inner flaws. Dambha is show, practising in order to be seen as holy. Ahankara is the I-maker, the feeling that the achievement is mine and lifts me above others. Last are the drivers: kama is wanting, raga is clinging to what pleases, and bala is the force behind them. These people are pushed along like a boat in a current, not drawn by anything higher. So the fault lies in method and motive, not in effort itself. His reason comes from 17.3: a person's faith takes the shape of their mind, so a proud, craving mind produces a proud, craving discipline. Krishna asks Arjuna to look at why a practice is taken up and by what rule. Shankara treats the missing scriptural basis as the heart of the fault, with pride and desire feeding it. Ramanuja reads these people as ones whose faith is led by passion and darkness, not goodness. Madhva likewise takes the harsh practice, cut off from right guidance, as leading nowhere good.

A man hauls a heavy stone up a long flight of steps, sweating, and glances at the street below to check who is watching. The stone is the austerity. The glance is the hypocrisy and ego that quietly decide why he lifts it, and where it is going.

1. Pick one discipline you already keep today: a fast, an early rising, a silence, a hard workout. 2. Before you begin, ask yourself in one sentence, 'Who would I like to know about this?' Just notice the answer. 3. Do the practice, and keep it unmentioned until evening. 4. At night, spend two minutes noting whether the quiet changed how the practice felt: easier, flatter, or about the same.

Ravi has told every cousin at the wedding that he is on a three-day fast. By the second afternoon he is dizzy, short-tempered, and keeps mentioning how hungry he is. Krishna's description would change that moment step by step. First, the harshness is named for what it is: stern effort with no guide behind it. Second, the question moves from 'how long can I last' to 'who am I doing this for'. Third, Ravi sees that the announcing, the comparing and the wanting to be admired are doing part of the pushing. Then he can keep a lighter, steadier practice, or stop without shame. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: effort done to be seen tends to need an audience and sours without one. Today's family doctors also advise against extreme fasting, going without sleep or pushing the body hard to prove something, and that advice fits the verse's caution about stern practice without guidance. The verse does not promise that a right motive makes a long fast safe. Anyone with illness, pregnancy or medication should ask a doctor first.
