Calm Amid Grief

Bhagavad Gita 2.10

Meaning · English

To him, grief-stricken in the midst of both armies, Krishna, master of the senses, spoke these words, smiling as if, Dhritarashtra, descendant of Bharat.

Sanjaya, describing the field to the blind king, picks out three things. The first is the name he gives Krishna: Hrishikesha, master of the senses and the mind. Arjuna's senses are drying up with anguish, and the one who speaks to him is the one who rules his own. The second is Arjuna's state, vishidantam, grief-stricken. The root sense is sinking down, like a man giving way under a weight. The third is prahasan iva, smiling as if. It is a slight smile, not a laugh, and the word 'as if' keeps it gentle. Sanjaya also says where it happens: in the midst of both armies, with the conch shells blown and the fighting about to start. Then Krishna speaks, and the words that follow are his first in the book. This is Sanjaya's report of what he saw, and the smile is his reading of it. Shankara treats Arjuna's grief as the seed of confusion that the teaching has to remove. Ramanuja says the grief came from affection for relatives and from not knowing the nature of the self, and that Krishna begins to teach it here. Madhva takes the smile as a sign of the Lord's fullness, unmoved by the crisis. None of them reads it as mockery.

A lifeguard walks to the edge of the pool where a swimmer is thrashing, and her face stays quiet. She does not shout back at the panic. Her calm gives the swimmer something to hold before any instruction comes. Krishna's slight smile between the armies works the same way: steadiness shown first, speech after.

1. Today, when someone near you is upset, wait one breath before you answer. 2. Lower your voice a little and slow it down. Keep your face soft. 3. Say one plain sentence, not a lecture. 4. Afterward, notice what your own face and shoulders were doing, and whether the other person's pace changed.

A girl stands frozen at the side of the school stage, ten minutes before her performance, breathing fast. Her mother crouches beside her. She could say 'Stop being silly', or she could say nothing and hover. Instead she lets her own shoulders drop, gives a small, easy smile, and speaks in a low, even voice. She does not argue with the fear. She names one next small thing: walk to the curtain with me. The girl's breath is still quick, but it begins to match her mother's. Ordinary experience confirms this much: a steady face and voice beside a frightened person calm the room before any argument does. The Gita's picture is the same, though far larger: Arjuna sinks in grief, and Krishna's first answer is composure. The mother's calm does not remove the fear or guarantee a good performance. The verse likewise does not say Arjuna's sorrow ends with the smile. It says only that the teaching begins from steadiness, not from alarm. Where fear is severe or lasts for weeks, a doctor is the right person to ask.
