Meaning · English
Sanjaya said: Having spoken so to Shree Krishna, master of the mind and senses, Arjuna, conqueror of sleep and chastiser of enemies, told Govinda, "I shall not fight," and fell silent.
Sanjaya reports this to the blind king, and the view is his. He piles up titles. Hrishikesha means master of the senses. Guḍakesha means conqueror of sleep. Parantapa means one who burns his foes. Govinda means one who gives pleasure to the senses. Each title is a contrast. The man called a conqueror and a scorcher of enemies has just said he will not fight. The one addressed as master of the senses is the one he turns to, since his own senses are drying up. The clause "I shall not fight" is the plain end of Arjuna's speech in the verses before. Then comes tushnim, silent. He has said all he can, and he stops. Sanjaya tells it flatly, as an event: a refusal, then quiet. The silence also leaves the next move to Krishna. Shankara reads the grief behind this as the confusion of attachment, which the teaching is meant to remove. Ramanuja reads it as sorrow and love for kin, with Krishna as the one who guides him through. Madhva reads the despair as a setting for a teaching given for the world's benefit. In all three, the silence is where the teaching begins.
A runner, halfway through a race, steps off the track, says to the coach, "I'm done," and sits on the kerb staring at his shoes. He is not leaving. He is stopped, waiting to be answered. Arjuna's refusal and silence are that kerb: a halt, not a settled decision.
1. Today, notice one moment when you say "I can't" or "I won't" about a task, and then go quiet. 2. Stay in that quiet for one minute. Do not argue with yourself or fix anything. 3. Notice whether the refusal is a decision or a pause, and what you are waiting for. 4. Later in the day, tell one trusted person what the task was.
A daughter sits in a parked car outside the hospital. On the phone she has just told her brother, "I can't do this," about the meeting where the family must decide on their father's surgery. She hangs up and says nothing. Her hands rest on the wheel. The Gita's scene shows what that moment holds. The refusal is spoken aloud, and saying it is already a small relief, because the heaviest thing is now outside her. The silence that follows is not an answer. It is the space where an answer can arrive, from a brother, a nurse or a quieter hour. Krishna's reply, in the verses after, does not scold. It begins by asking what the grief is really about. Ordinary experience confirms that people often go quiet right after saying the hardest thing. The verse promises none of that. It does not say she will walk in calm, or that the surgery will go well, or that grief will lift. It shows only that a refusal and a silence can come before help, and that the man who said "I will not" was still sitting there to be spoken to.
