Meaning · English
I do not see what could drive away this anguish that dries up my senses, even if I won on earth a kingdom prosperous and without rival, or lordship over the gods themselves.
Arjuna is speaking, and this is his view in a bad hour. Three words carry it. Shoka is anguish, the grief that sits in the body like a weight. Indriya means the senses, the faculties through which a person tastes, sees and feels the world. Uchchhoshana means drying up. Arjuna says the grief is draining his senses of their life. Then he names the biggest prizes he can think of. Asapatna means without a rival, a rule no one contests. Adhipatya is sovereignty, and he stretches it to the lordship that the gods hold. His point is plain. He cannot see any victory, however large, that would lift this sorrow. He does not give the reason here; he only states that no prize would answer it. So he asks what the prize is for. He is not yet asking what his duty is, and he does not yet know that grief might be answered by understanding. The commentators read him differently. Shankara takes the sorrow as the fruit of attachment and ignorance, which is why no outward gain can reach it. Ramanuja sees it as the love of a kinsman, which shows Arjuna is ready to be taught. Madhva treats it as a sincere cry that leads him to seek guidance.
A man comes home after a long illness in the house, and his friends bring him a huge feast. The table is full, but he cannot taste any of it. Arjuna's kingdom is that feast: the sweetness is on offer, but the grief has dulled the tongue that would receive it.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes and name one thing you are working toward that you think will finally settle you. 2. Next to it, write down what is actually weighing on you right now, in one plain sentence. 3. Notice whether the first thing could reach the second. Do not argue with the answer. Just see it. 4. Tell one trusted person the plain sentence from step 2, as Arjuna tells Krishna.
A man sits in his parked car outside his father's house. The property sale closed today for more than anyone expected. His brother is not speaking to him because of it. He has not eaten since morning and cannot say what he wants. Arjuna's words fit this moment. The gain is real, and it sits beside a hurt it cannot touch. Ordinary experience agrees that heavy distress dulls appetite, sleep and taste, so the senses do seem to dry up. What the verse changes, step by step, is the naming. The man stops asking whether the money was worth it and says what is wrong: he has lost his brother's goodwill. That is a smaller, truer problem than a vague emptiness, and it points to a conversation instead of another purchase. Then, like Arjuna, he admits he does not see the way out and asks someone who might. The limit is clear. Saying this does not end the grief or mend the quarrel. Where low mood, poor sleep or lost appetite last for weeks, a doctor should see him. In the Gita, Arjuna's sentence is where the questioning begins, not where it ends.
