Meaning · English
I worship Kalabhairava, lord of Kashi. The king of gods serves his lotus feet. Snake for sacred thread, moon on his head, mine of mercy, praised by Narada and yogis, sky-clad.
The singer names who they worship: Kalabhairava, lord of the city of Kashi. Then the marks of who he is. The king of the gods himself attends his feet, and those feet make pure whatever they touch. A priest wears a cotton thread across the chest. Kalabhairava wears a living snake there. A crescent moon sits in his hair. He is called a mine of mercy. Narada and the company of yogis bow to him. He wears no clothes. The open directions of the sky are his only covering.
Picture the big, scarred dog that guards a house at the end of a lane. Strangers cross the street to avoid it, but the children of that house fall asleep against its side. The snake and the bare, sky-clad body are what the stranger sees. The mine of mercy is what the children know.
