Meaning · English
Bright as ten million suns, he ferries us across the sea of becoming: blue-throated, three-eyed, granting what we seek, Death to Death itself. I worship Kalabhairava, lord of Kashi.
His light is counted in suns, ten million of them. Life is pictured as a wide sea of being born and dying again, and he is the one who carries people over it. He gives what people ask him for. He has three eyes, a throat stained blue, and eyes shaped like lotus petals, and he holds prayer beads and a trident. The sharpest phrase calls him the death of Death. The same word means both time and death, and both end in him. He himself does not wear away.
A sand timer sits on a kitchen shelf. Every few minutes it runs empty, and someone has to turn it over. The sand is always running out, but the hand that turns the glass is not inside it. Kalabhairava as death of Death is that hand. Time runs out for everything in the glass, and he stands outside it.
