Meaning · English
Holding trident, axe, noose and staff, dark-bodied, first cause and first god, undying, free of illness, fearsome in might, lover of the wondrous dance, I worship Kalabhairava, lord of Kashi.
His hands are full: a trident, an axe, a noose, a staff. These are the tools of someone who acts, who cuts, binds and strikes. Yet the same figure is called the first cause, the god who came before the others, the one who cannot wear out and never falls sick. His body is dark. His strength is frightening to see. And he loves to dance, a strange and wonderful dance. The power that carries weapons and the joy that moves to rhythm belong to one lord, the one who rules Kashi.
Picture a busy cook at a hot stove, surrounded by a cleaver, a sharp knife, kitchen string and a heavy rolling pin. Each one could hurt someone. But the cook moves among them easily, turning and reaching in a kind of rhythm. The tools are real and sharp, and the one holding them is completely at ease.
