What Reciting Brings

Kalabhairavashtakam 9

Meaning · English

Those who recite this lovely octet to Kalabhairava, a path to knowledge and freedom, growing rich merit, ending grief, delusion, misery, greed, anger and torment, surely reach his feet.

The last verse turns from the god to the hymn. The eight verses are called lovely to say aloud, and they are described as a means toward two things: knowledge and release. They also increase merit of many kinds. Then comes a list of what they wear away: grief, confusion, a shrunken and wretched spirit, greed, anger, and the inner burning these leave behind. The promise at the end is nearness. People who recite it surely come to rest close to Kalabhairava's feet.

A path walked across a lawn every evening soon shows as a bare line in the grass, and it leads straight to the door you always walk toward. Reciting the eight verses again and again works the same way. The repeated words wear down grief and anger and leave a clear way to Kalabhairava's feet.
