भूतसङ्घनायकं विशालकीर्तिदायकं काशिवासलोकपुण्यपापशोधकं विभुम् । नीतिमार्गकोविदं पुरातनं जगत्पतिं काशिकापुराधिनाथकालभैरवं भजे
Meaning · English
Leader of spirit hosts, giver of wide renown, all-pervading, clearing both merit and sin from Kashi's people, versed in right conduct, ancient, world's master: I worship Kalabhairava, Kashi's lord.
Kalabhairava leads the crowds of spirits and beings who follow Shiva. He gives fame that travels far. The most striking line is about the people who live in Kashi. He clears away their sin, and their merit as well. Good and bad are both removed. He is called all-pervading, present everywhere, yet he knows the path of right conduct in fine detail. He is ancient and master of the whole world, and still he is named as lord of one particular city.
At the end of the school day, a teacher wipes the whole blackboard. The correct sums go along with the crossed-out mistakes, and the board is left blank for the morning. That is the picture of what he does for Kashi's people. He removes the right answers along with the wrong ones, so nothing is carried forward.

भूतगणों के नायक, विपुल यश देने वाले, सर्वव्यापी, काशीवासियों के पुण्य और पाप दोनों को मिटाने वाले, धर्म-मार्ग के ज्ञाता, सनातन, जगत के स्वामी: काशी के अधिपति कालभैरव को मैं भजता हूँ।
कालभैरव शिव के अनुगामी भूतों और प्राणियों की भीड़ के नायक हैं। वे ऐसा यश देते हैं जो दूर-दूर तक फैलता है। सबसे अनोखी पंक्ति काशी में रहने वाले लोगों के बारे में है। वे उनके पाप को मिटाते हैं, और उनके पुण्य को भी। अच्छा और बुरा दोनों हट जाते हैं। उन्हें सर्वव्यापी कहा गया है, हर जगह उपस्थित, फिर भी वे धर्म के मार्ग को बारीकी से जानते हैं। वे सनातन हैं और सारे जगत के स्वामी हैं, फिर भी उन्हें एक विशेष नगरी का स्वामी कहा गया है।
पाठशाला का दिन पूरा होने पर एक अध्यापक पूरा श्यामपट पोंछ देता है। सही सवाल भी कटी हुई भूलों के साथ मिट जाते हैं, और पट सुबह के लिए कोरा रह जाता है। काशी के लोगों के लिए वे जो करते हैं, उसका यही चित्र है। वे गलत उत्तरों के साथ सही उत्तर भी मिटा देते हैं, ताकि कुछ भी आगे न जाए।
