The story · English
Brahma spoke. In the Padma age, Pulastya, my mind-born son, had a son named Visrava, and Visrava's son was Vaisravana. He ruled the city of Alaka, built long ago by Visvakarman, because in an earlier age he had worshipped the three-eyed god with severe austerity. When that age passed and the Meghavahana age began, this son of Yajnadatta, the giver of wealth, took up a penance almost impossible to bear. He had learned how great the power of devotion to Shiva is, even from a single lamp. He reached Kasi, the city that lights the mind, and there he set up a Shiva linga, offered it flowers of true feeling, and sat motionless in meditation, his body fed by the fire of his own austerity.
He held back his breath until his mind was still as a windless flame, and he burned on, until only skin and bones remained. A hundred times ten thousand years passed. Then Shiva came himself, with Parvati, and found the lord of Alaka with his mind fixed on the linga, still as a post. Shiva said, I am here to give you a boon. Tell me what you want. The ascetic opened his eyes and saw before him a light brighter than a thousand rising suns, Shiva with the moon in his hair and Uma beside him. The glare overcame his sight, and he shut his eyes. He said, Lord, give me the strength to see your feet. To see you before me is the boon itself. What else could I ask?
Shiva touched him with the palm of his hand and gave him the power to see. The man opened his eyes, and he looked first at Uma. Then, with his new sight, he began to say over and over, Who is this woman beside Shiva, so beautiful in every limb? What penance did she do that was greater than mine? What beauty, what love, what good fortune. He kept staring and repeating it, with a hard, hungry gaze, and his left eye burst from looking at her. Uma said to Shiva, Why does this wicked ascetic keep looking at me and speaking so? He keeps coming back to me with his right eye, envying my beauty, my love and my fortune. Shiva laughed and answered, Uma, he is your son. He does not look at you with cruelty, he only marvels at your radiance.
Then Shiva said to him, Child, I am pleased with your penance and I give you boons. Be lord of the treasures, master of the guhyakas, king of the yakshas and kinnaras, and ruler of all who live in virtue, the giver of wealth to all. I will be your friend always and will live near Alaka to deepen your joy. Come and fall at her feet, for she is your mother. Shiva then asked Parvati to show him grace. She said, Child, may your devotion to Shiva stay pure forever. May you have only one tawny eye, the left one that burst, and may every boon the god gave you stand. Because you envied my beauty, your name will be Kubera. Shiva and the goddess then entered Kubera's home, called Vaisvesvara, and Mount Kailasa, Shiva's dwelling, stood near Alaka.
Brahma told Narada what followed. Shiva decided to go to Kailasa in his Rudra form and be a friend to Kubera there. He beat his drum, and its deep, calling sound filled the three worlds. Vishnu, Brahma, the gods, sages, siddhas and countless ganas came, led by Sankhakarna, Nandishvara and others, each with his crores of followers. They bowed to Shiva with folded hands. Kubera welcomed them all with worship and gifts, and Shiva embraced him and smelled his forehead. Visvakarman built dwellings on the mountain. The gods anointed Shiva, and he sat on his throne and granted their wishes. He sent Vishnu and Brahma home, saying he would always watch over them, and told Kubera, I am bound by your love. Go home without fear, I am always your ally. Shiva lived on Kailasa, meditating, roaming with his ganas, and later took Sati, Daksha's daughter, as his wife.
