Meaning · English

Illness, dullness, doubt, carelessness, bodily heaviness, craving for sense pleasure, mistaken seeing, failing to reach a footing in practice, and failing to stay on it once reached: these scatterings of the mind are the obstacles.

Three words carry the sutra. Citta is the mind-field. Vikshepa is a throwing apart, a scattering. Antaraya is what comes in between, an obstacle. The sutra says the scatterings of the citta are the obstacles, and it names nine. Vyadhi is illness. Styana is dullness, the mind unwilling to work. Samshaya is doubt. Pramada is carelessness, leaving out the means of practice. Alasya is heaviness of body and mind. Avirati is not turning away from sense objects, so craving keeps pulling. Bhranti-darshana is mistaken seeing, taking one thing for another. Alabdha-bhumikatva is not reaching a footing in practice. Anavasthitatva is reaching it and not staying. The last two are the failures of a person who has already begun. Patanjali has set out what yoga is and how it is practised. Now he answers the next question: what gets in the way? He answers with a plain list and no blame. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, takes the nine as distractions that arise along with the mind's activity and stand against yoga. The later commentators keep the same list and explain each item in more detail.

Loose pages lie on a table beside an open window. A gust lifts them, and they slide in different directions. Each of the nine is a gust like that. The pages are the attention, and the sutra names what blows it off the table.

1. Choose one ordinary hour today, such as the start of work or study. 2. When your attention leaves, name what pulled it away: tiredness, doubt, carelessness, craving, or something else from the list. 3. Do not argue with it. Say the name silently and return to the task. 4. At night, spend one minute recalling which one came most often.
