One Anchor Against Distraction

Yoga Sutras 1.32

Meaning · English

To put an end to these obstacles, practise on one single principle, again and again.

Three words carry the sutra. Tat means "these", the scatterers just listed. Pratishedha is a warding off, a keeping away. Eka-tattva is "one principle": eka is one, tattva is "that-ness", a single thing taken as it is. Abhyasa is practice, a steady return to the same point. Plainly: to ward off the obstacles, practise on one thing. Every word is accounted for. Patanjali has just named sickness, doubt, laziness, grief, restless limbs and breath. Each is a different problem, yet he gives one remedy, not a remedy for each. A mind pulled in many directions is given a single place to stand. The sutra rests on the two before it. Sutras 1.30 and 1.31 list the scatterers. Earlier, abhyasa was defined as effort to stay steady. This sutra joins the two: the practice now has an object, and the object is one. Vyasa's commentary takes the one principle as a single object to which the mind is held. He says that a mind so held is not broken up by the obstacles. Later readers differ on what the one principle is. Some name God, others any single object of meditation. The sutra itself leaves the choice open.

A rope tied to many small posts gets pulled every way the wind blows. Tie it to one stake driven deep and it stays put. The scatterers are the wind. The single principle is the stake the mind is fastened to, so the pulling has nothing else to move.

1. Choose one plain object you can look at or hear, such as a candle flame, a steady sound, or your breath at the nostrils. Keep the same one all week. 2. Sit for five minutes at the same hour each day. Rest your attention on that object. 3. When the mind wanders, notice where it went. Name it quietly: worry, doubt, restlessness. Then return to the object. 4. Afterward, note which scatterer came most often.
