Meeting the Hidden One

Meaning · English
The wise person takes up steady meditation on the self and so knows God: the ancient one, hard to see, hidden deep, lodged in the cave, dwelling in the depths. Knowing him, that person lets go of joy and sorrow.
Three words carry this. Adhyatma-yoga is made of adhyatma, what belongs to the inner self (the atman, the one who sees), and yoga, a steady joining of the mind to it. So it means sustained turning inward, not a passing mood. Dhira is the steady, wise person, one whose mind does not wobble. Deva is the shining one, God, the name Yama gives to what is found. Yama tells Nachiketas that this being is ancient, hard to see, and hidden in a cave and in the depths. The picture is of something set far inside, not lying on the surface where the eyes and the senses look. That is why outward effort alone does not reach it. The wise person finds it by turning inward and staying there. The reason follows from what Nachiketas has already done. He has refused every reward, and rewards come from outside and bring joy and sorrow with them. Yama says that the one who knows this hidden being leaves both behind. Shankara reads the ancient being as the self within every person, and the inward turning as drawing the mind back from outer objects and resting it there.
A deep well in a courtyard. Looking down from the rim, you see only a dark circle. Stand still, let the bucket rope stop swinging and the ripples settle, and the water below shows its own surface. The well is the hidden depth of the heart. The stillness is the steady inward turning.
1. Choose one ordinary moment today, such as the first five minutes after you sit down with tea, or the walk home. 2. Put the phone away and let your eyes rest on nothing in particular. 3. Each time you notice the mind running to a plan or a worry, name it quietly, "outside," and return to simply being the one who is aware. 4. Tonight, recall one swing of gladness or annoyance from the day and notice where in the body it was felt.
A farmer stands at the edge of his field in the first week of June. After weeks of dry sky, the first rain arrives. Relief rises in him at once, and within minutes it turns to worry about the low corner flooding and the seed washing out. He is glad, then anxious, and he has done nothing but stand there. Yama's teaching says the wise person, turned inward in steady meditation, comes to know the ancient hidden being and leaves joy and sorrow behind. For the farmer, that would begin with noticing the swing itself. Gladness and dread are both arriving from the sky, from outside him. Someone in him is watching both arrive. Resting there, even briefly, he can still walk the field, dig the drain and plan the sowing, with a little more room around the feeling. The verse does not promise that the flood will not come, or that loss will not hurt. It is also no substitute for help when sorrow becomes heavy and lasting. Ordinary experience does confirm that a mood grips less tightly once it has been seen as a mood.
