Refusing Every Reward

Meaning · English
Yama says: You saw the fulfilment of every desire, the world's support, the unending fruit of sacrifice, the far shore of fearlessness, the praised and spacious refuge. Steady and wise, Nachiketas, you saw it all and let it go.
Yama lists what Nachiketas turned down, and the list is of real goods. Three words carry it. Kama is desire, and its apti is the reaching of it, so every wish granted. Pratishtha is a foundation, a place to stand, here the world's own support. Abhaya is fearlessness, literally no fear. Yama adds the unending fruit of ritual, the praised and spacious refuge, and the far shore of fearlessness. These are the best things a mind can want, with no shabby bait among them. Yama says Nachiketas looked at them with his eyes open. Dhriti, firm holding, kept him steady, and dhira, the steady one, is what Yama calls him. The reason is Yama's own praise: a person is shown wise by what they decline when it is fully in view. Nachiketas had already asked for something else, and nothing offered could stand in for it. Shankara reads the list as the highest attainments of the world of change, the heights of a created realm. Even those are not what Nachiketas was after. The verse asks the listener to notice how large an offer can be before steadiness is truly tested.
A traveller walks through a station lit with food stalls, warm and fragrant, and every stall is good. He walks past them to the platform where his own train will come. The stalls are the finest rewards of the world. The platform is the one thing he came for.
1. Tonight, write down one thing you want badly this month, and one thing you want more deeply and keep putting off. 2. Next time something pleasant is offered that pulls you from the second, such as a show, a purchase or an invitation, pause for ten slow breaths before answering. 3. Notice whether the pull is stronger when you are tired or hungry. Eat or rest first, then decide. 4. If you say no, do it quietly, and watch how it feels afterward.
A farmer's son stands in the yard while a buyer lays out a large offer for the family's land. His phone shows messages urging him to take it. The money is real and so are his debts. The verse changes the moment in steps. He lets the offer be as good as it is, without belittling it. He asks what he actually set out to protect, and whether the offer serves that or only soothes the pressure of today. He lets the answer wait a night. Ordinary experience confirms that wanting sharpens when we are tired and pressed, so waiting helps. Yama's praise goes to the one who sees a great reward clearly and declines it for a reason he can name. The verse does not say the offer is wrong to take, and it gives no ruling on debt or land. It does not ease the fear of a bad season, and it does not replace advice from a lawyer, a family elder or a doctor where one is needed.
