Yama says: I know a treasure does not last, and that what stands firm is never won by things that do not stand. Even so, I laid the Nachiketa fire, and with fleeting materials I reached the one that lasts.

Three words carry the verse. Shevadhi is a treasure, something precious laid up and stored. Anitya is what does not last: a (not) plus nitya (lasting). Dhruva is what is fixed and firm. Yama tells Nachiketas that he knows every stored treasure is anitya, and that the dhruva cannot be bought with anitya coin. Then he says what he did. He built the Nachiketa fire, a ritual altar made of bricks, fuel and offerings, all of which burn down or wear away. Through it he reached something that lasts. The reason is a plain one. Yama is not boasting. He is telling a boy who refused wealth why the refusal is sound, and showing that he too once worked with perishable things, with open eyes. The altar was a tool. He did not mistake it for the goal. The listener is asked to see the difference between a means and an end, and to use the first without clinging to it. Shankara reads the verse this way: the lasting Yama reached is lasting only relatively, a long-held station gained by the rite, and it is not the final Self. For Shankara, the verse shows that even a great result of ritual falls short of what Yama goes on to teach.

A person crosses a stream on stepping stones. Each stone is wet, small and left behind with the next step, yet without them the far bank cannot be reached. The stones are the fleeting things, the bank is what lasts, and the crossing works because no one tries to carry a stone home.

1. Tonight, pick one thing you work at daily, such as a job, a chore or a fitness routine. Ask what it is for, and write the answer in one line. 2. Notice whether that thing has quietly become the goal itself. Spend two minutes on this. 3. Tomorrow, do the task once with the purpose in mind, and treat the task itself as a tool you will put down. 4. At day's end, note whether your hold on it felt lighter.

A man carries the last box out of the shop he has run for thirty years. The shelves, the ledger and the regular customers are all behind him, and he feels something has been taken. Yama's words point to a quieter question. What was the shop for? Perhaps it fed a family, taught him patience, and let him be trusted by neighbours. Those results did not sit on the shelves. Asking this, step by step, he can separate what ended from what the years actually produced, and can stand in the doorway thanking the tools without being crushed by their going. Ordinary experience confirms that people who confuse a job or a possession with their purpose feel its loss as a loss of themselves. The verse does not promise that the ache will vanish, that the money worry is answered, or that the lasting thing Yama speaks of will be felt in that doorway. It only offers a way of looking, and leaves grief and practical decisions where they are.
