This understanding is not won by argument. Spoken by another, dearest one, it becomes easy to know. You have grasped it, steady in truth. May we always have a questioner like you, Nachiketas.

Yama is praising Nachiketas while he explains why the boy could learn this at all. Three words carry it. Tarka is reasoning, the back-and-forth of argument and counter-argument. Mati is the settled understanding, the conviction a person lives by. Satyadhriti is firmness in what is true: dhriti is holding steady, satya is what is real. Yama says the understanding of the Self does not arrive by tarka. It is easy to know when another declares it, and he calls Nachiketas dearest as he says so. The reason is the problem set out in the verses just before: the Self is subtle and hard to grasp, and arguing about it from outside only produces more arguments. Someone who has seen it must point to it. Yama then names what made Nachiketas fit to receive it: he refused every pleasant offer and held to his question. Yama ends with a wish that teachers may always meet questioners like him. Shankara reads the teacher as one who has realised the Self as his own, so that no rival opinion of his own stands between him and the pupil. For Shankara, the understanding comes through such a teacher, not through the pupil's reasoning alone. The verse asks the listener to hold the question with steadiness and to be willing to be taught.

A child tries to tie a shoelace from a diagram of loops and arrows and keeps ending with a knot. An older sibling does it once, slowly, with the hands in view, and the child gets it at the next try. Argument is the diagram. The teacher is the hands that have already done it.

1. Choose one question you have been turning over alone for weeks, such as how to forgive someone or how to face a fear. 2. Today, write it in one plain sentence. 3. This week, ask one person who has lived through something like it to tell you what they saw, and listen for ten minutes without arguing. 4. Afterwards, note what became clear that your own thinking had not reached.

It is two in the morning. A woman whose father died last month lies awake, reading opinions online and arguing both sides in her head about what a life leaves behind. The more she reasons, the less settled she feels. Yama answers Nachiketas, who asked the same kind of question, that argument alone does not carry such an understanding. It comes when someone who knows it speaks it plainly. In her moment, the verse would turn her from more reasoning to finding a person. She might call an aunt who sat beside many deaths, or an elder who has lived with the question. She would ask that person to say simply what they know, and she would hold her own question steadily while listening. Ordinary experience agrees that some things become clear faster when a person who has been through them says them aloud. The verse does not promise that her grief will lift or that one conversation will settle the question. It does not replace a doctor if sleeplessness or low mood goes on for weeks.
