Those who leave my paths of loving devotion, knowledge and right action, and instead serve small desires with restless senses and breath, keep wandering through birth and death. Steadiness in one's own station is called virtue. Straying from it is called fault. This is the settled rule for both.
Three paths are named. Bhakti is loving devotion, from bhaj, to share in. Jnana is knowing, the understanding of what the self is. Kriya is action, work done as an offering. Krishna calls these 'my paths', the roads that lead to him. Two more words matter. Adhikara is one's standing or fitness: the place, duty and capacity a person actually has. Nishtha is steadiness, from a root meaning to stand firm. Krishna first describes those who drop all three paths and chase kshudra kamas, petty desires, with restless senses and breath. He says they keep going round in samsara, the wheel of birth and death. Then he gives a plain measure. Steadiness in one's own adhikara is guna, virtue. Wandering from it is dosha, fault. He adds that this is the settled conclusion for both. The teaching sits where Uddhava has been asking what makes anything right or wrong. Krishna's answer is not a list of acts. Right and wrong are measured against where a person stands. The same deed can be steady for one and straying for another. Krishna asks the listener to find his own path and stay on it, instead of grabbing at desires one after another. The commentators read the verse this way.
Two men dig for water in dry ground. One digs a single hole and keeps at it until the earth turns damp. The other digs ten shallow holes in an afternoon and reaches nothing. Staying in one's own place and path is the deep hole. Restless desire is the ten scrapes.
1. Tonight, write down the three things your day truly asks of you: for example, your work, your family, and your prayer. 2. Tomorrow, pick one and stay with it for twenty minutes without switching, answering messages or starting something new. 3. Each time you feel pulled toward some small want, note it silently and go back. 4. At bedtime, notice which part of the day felt steady and which felt scattered.
A woman sits on her bed at eleven at night. In six weeks she has started an evening course, a new diet, a side business and a reading plan. She has finished none of them and feels worse with each one she drops. Krishna's measure would change the question she asks. She would stop asking which of these is best and ask which one belongs to her standing right now: her job, her children, her health. She would keep that one steady and let the others wait without guilt. The verse is clear that scattering across many small wants is what keeps a person turning without arriving. Ordinary experience agrees that a tired, hurried mind jumps from one thing to the next. The verse does not tell her which task is hers, and it does not lift her tiredness or settle her money worries. It gives her a way to choose one thing and stay with it.
