Three Reasons for Purity Rules

Bhagavata Purana 11.21.3

Purity and impurity are laid down even for things that are alike. Good and bad qualities, the auspicious and the inauspicious, are set so that a substance can be judged. They serve three ends: dharma, dealings with others, and the journey of life. Sinless one, I have shown this way of conduct to those who carry the burden of dharma.

Three words carry the teaching. Shuddhi and ashuddhi are purity and impurity, from shudh, to clear or cleanse. Guna and dosha are a thing's good quality and its fault. Dharma, from dhri, to hold, is what holds a life and a community together. Krishna begins with a puzzle. Two things can be the same in make and still be called pure and impure. He says the labels are set on purpose, so that a person can weigh a substance before using it. The labels are tools for judging, not a second kind of matter hidden in the thing. Then he names three purposes. Some rules serve dharma, the duties and worship a person is bound to. Some serve vyavahara, the ordinary give and take of food, work and company. Some serve yatra, which the commentators take as the going of life itself, keeping body and household in order along the road. He calls Uddhava anagha, sinless, and says this conduct is shown to those who carry dharma's burden. It is taught here because Uddhava's question is why the rules differ from case to case. The answer is that each rule has a job, and the job decides it. Krishna asks Uddhava to see rules that way, as instruments with a purpose, and to know which purpose a rule serves before he judges anything by it.

Two jugs hold the same water from the same tap. One is marked for drinking, the other for the plants. Nobody calls the plant water poisoned. The mark only says what each jug is for. The purity rules work like the marks: they sort alike things by what a person means to do with them.

1. Today, pick three household rules you follow without thinking, such as washing hands, a shoes-off doorway, or a separate cup for the sick. 2. Beside each, name which purpose it serves: duty or worship, dealings with others, or keeping the body going. 3. Notice which one you could not name. Ask whoever taught it to you why it exists. 4. Keep that one rule carefully for a week, knowing its reason, and notice whether it feels different.

A young man is cooking for his grandmother on her first evening home from hospital. He hesitates over the cutting board and wonders whether washing it twice is fussing or sense. The verse gives him a way through. Raw chicken and cut fruit may look alike on a board, yet one is handled by a stricter rule. The rule exists for a stated end, here the body's safe passage through a weak week. So he asks what the rule is for, finds it is for her health, and washes the board without fretting. The same question sorts his other doubts: this rule is for the household's peace, that one for his duties. Ordinary experience confirms that a rule with a known reason is kept more steadily than one kept by habit alone. The limit is plain. Washing a board does not cure her illness or replace her doctor's instructions, and the verse does not claim it does.
