Where the Antelope Roams

Bhagavata Purana 11.21.7

Meaning · English

Of places, times and things, best of good men, merit and fault are laid down only to regulate action. A land where the black antelope does not roam is unclean and unfit for sacred work. Even where the antelope roams, a land that is Kikata, or lacks refinement, or is barren salt ground is unfit.

Krishna begins with a principle. Merit and fault, which he calls guna and dosha, are attached to places, times and things so that action has some order. He says they are not rankings of cosmic worth. They are a working guide for deciding what to do, and where. Then he gives examples about land. Black antelope, krishnasara, is the sign of a place fit for Vedic rites. Where it does not roam, the place is called ashuchi, unclean, and abrahmanya, unfit for sacred work. Even where it does roam, he names exceptions: Kikata, a region the tradition counts as lacking the right culture; ground without refinement; and irina, barren salt soil where nothing grows. The commentators treat these as examples, not a complete map. Why say this at all? Uddhava is being shown that the rules of purity are tools. A field that cannot grow barley cannot host a rite that needs barley. A place is judged by what the act needs. The same tools are named in the verses around it: rules serve dharma, daily dealings and the upkeep of life. The verse asks the listener to hold such rules as a craftsman holds tools, used for their purpose and not mistaken for the goal.

A carpenter keeps different saws for different woods. A fine saw is useless on a thick beam, and nobody calls it bad. The saw is judged by the cut it must make. Places and times are judged the same way, by what the act in hand needs.

1. Today, pick one rule you follow without thinking, such as where you eat, when you pray, or what you keep clean. 2. Ask in plain words what job it does for you. Write the answer in one line. 3. If the job is clear, keep the rule and notice that it feels lighter. 4. If you cannot name a job, ask someone older why it exists before you drop it or defend it.

A man is about to open a small tea stall in a rented room. His aunt says the room faces the wrong way and a previous tenant failed there. He is anxious, and no one has told him whether to ignore her or obey her. The verse gives him a way to sort it. He asks what the rule is for. A room has real merits and faults for a stall: foot traffic, damp walls, a working drain, clean water, a safe gas connection. These match the text's idea that fitness depends on what the act needs. Whether the direction matters is a question for his tradition, and the text offers it as guidance for action, not a guarantee of results. He can check the drain and the wiring, and he can honour his aunt's worry without handing her the lease decision. Ordinary experience confirms that a place suits some work better than others. The verse does not promise the stall will succeed, and it does not replace a health inspection or a lawyer's reading of the contract.
