Meaning · English

A time that suits an act is a good time, whether it comes through the substance used or of itself. Whatever turns the act back is called a fault, the fault of the act left undone. The purity and impurity of a substance are reckoned by another substance, by a spoken word, by a rite of cleansing, by time, by whether it is great or small. By strength or weakness, by understanding, by wealth, by what a person means to gain for himself, people do wrong in each case according to the place and the condition they are in.

Krishna is talking to Uddhava about how right and wrong are measured. Three words carry the teaching. Karma is action, from kri, to do. Guna is a virtue or good quality, and also a strand of something. Dosha is a fault, from a root meaning to go bad, as milk does. Agha is wrong or sin, literally something that weighs on you. The first lines say a time is good when it fits the act, and that this fit can come from the materials or from the time itself. A fault is whatever makes the act turn back or fail. The next lines list what settles whether a substance is clean or unclean: another substance (water on a stain), a spoken word, a cleansing rite, the passing of time, and size, since a little and a lot differ. The last lines turn to the doer. His strength or weakness, his understanding, his wealth and his purpose all count, and so do his place and his condition. The point is that no act or object carries a fixed label. Krishna gives the list so that Uddhava stops asking whether a thing is pure in itself and starts asking pure for whom, when, where and for what. The commentators read the list as the working tools of the rules of conduct, not as a loophole. What it asks of the listener is to look at the whole situation before naming something clean or sinful.

A spoonful of salt is the right thing in a pot of dal and ruins a cup of tea. The salt did not change. Its goodness depended on where it went, how much of it there was, and who was going to drink it. Acts and substances are judged the same way.

1. Tonight, pick one thing you usually call simply good or simply bad: a late cup of tea, an afternoon nap, a sharp word to a child. 2. Ask four questions of it: at what time, how much, for whom, and for what purpose. 3. Write one line for each answer on a scrap of paper. 4. Notice whether your first judgement holds, softens or sharpens. Spend five minutes on this, no more.

A grandmother at a village wedding feast looks at the rice and curd that have sat on the table since noon, in July heat. At breakfast the same dish would have been fine. She slows down and asks questions: how long has it been out, how much is she being offered, and is the toddler on her lap going to share it? She takes a small amount of the fresh dal instead and keeps the curd from the child. That is the verse at work. The dish is the same, but the hour, the quantity and the eater change the verdict. A good family doctor says much the same about food: time and warmth change what is safe, and an infant, an old person or a pregnant woman is less able to bear what a healthy adult shrugs off. Ordinary experience also confirms that tiredness and hunger make a person more likely to act badly. The limit is plain. The verse gives no way to tell by looking whether food has spoiled, and it does not replace a doctor when someone is ill. It also does not say that anything goes. It teaches that the question has to be asked fully.
