Meaning · English

For grain, wood, bone and thread, for liquids, metals and leather, and for things made of earth, Krishna names the cleansers: time, air, fire, earth and water, used together or one by one. Whatever has been smeared with filth is cleansed by whatever takes away both the stain and its smell. When the thing returns to its own nature, that much cleansing is what is wanted.

Krishna gives Uddhava a practical list. Seven kinds of material are named: grain, wood, bone, thread, liquids, metals, leather, and earthen things. Five cleansers are named: time, air, fire, earth and water. Any material may be cleaned by one cleanser or by several together. Three words carry the idea. Amedhya is what is unfit for offering, filth of any kind. Shaucha is cleansing, the act and the state of being clean. Prakriti, here, simply means a thing's own nature: what it was before it was soiled. The rule is short. A soiled thing is cleaned by whatever removes the stain and also the smell. Both are named, so a surface wipe that leaves the odor behind does not count. Cleaning stops when the thing is itself again. That is the measure. Nothing more is asked, and nothing less is enough. The commentators read the list as showing that each material has its own fitting cleanser. Fire suits metal, and sun and air suit cloth and grain. Krishna teaches this in the middle of a longer talk on how place, time and substance decide what is clean or unclean. He is answering a plain question: how much cleaning is enough? His answer is that the thing itself sets the standard. The listener is asked to clean by this test and to stop there.

A copper pot comes back from a feast, blackened and greasy. You scrub until the grease is gone, the smell is gone and the copper shines as copper. You do not scrub through the metal. The pot is the thing itself, and its own clear surface tells you when the washing is done.

1. Pick one soiled thing today: a pan, a cloth or a leather shoe. 2. Choose the cleanser that suits its material: hot water, sun and air, or a dry wipe. 3. Clean until both the stain and the smell are gone. 4. Check by eye and nose, then stop. Notice that you did not need to scrub further.

A cook finishes slicing raw chicken on a wooden board, and the kitchen smells of it. She is tired and tempted to wipe it and move on. The verse asks for a measure. Is the stain gone? Is the smell gone? Has the board returned to being plain wood? So she scrubs it with hot water and soap, rinses it and stands it in the air to dry. Her knife, a metal, goes through hot water too. A good family doctor would agree with much of this: heat, water, soap, sun and air do remove most of what makes surfaces unsafe, and different materials need different handling. Leather is wiped rather than soaked, for example. Ordinary experience also confirms that a lingering smell often means the job is unfinished. The limit is that smell and stain are not a full test. Some contamination cannot be seen or smelled, so raw meat, a sickroom or an infection still calls for proper hygiene and a doctor's advice. The old text measures by what the senses can judge, and it does not claim more.
