Bathing, giving, austerity, one's stage of life, strength, sacred rites and works: by these and by remembering me, the self becomes pure. Made pure, the twice-born should perform his rites. Knowing the mantra rightly, keeping the act clean, and offering it to me: by six such things dharma comes about. Its opposite is adharma.

Krishna is answering a plain question: what makes an act right? His answer is that no single thing does. Dharma, from the root dhri, to hold up, is what keeps a life steady. It is held up by several supports together. He starts with the doer. Bathing, giving, austerity, age, strength and rites all bear on whether a person is fit to act. But the self is made pure, shaucha, by smriti, remembering Krishna. Smriti comes from the root smri, to recall. Only then does he tell the twice-born to go and do his rites. Three more supports follow. The mantra has to be understood, not just recited. The act itself has to be clean. And it is given over to Krishna, arpana, placing it before him. The commentators count six factors in all: place, time, substance, doer, mantra and action. Each has to be sound. He closes with a plain rule: where these hold, there is dharma, and where they are reversed, adharma. The teaching comes after the earlier verses on what spoils an act. Here Krishna says what makes one whole. It asks the listener to look at the person acting first, then at what is being done, and then to say whom it is for.

A cart wheel with six spokes. Take one spoke out and the wheel still turns, but the ride jolts and the rim soon warps. Dharma is like that wheel: the doer, the knowledge, the clean act and the offering each carry some of the load, and the whole runs true only when all of them are there.

1. Pick one task today that matters to you, such as cooking a meal or writing a letter to someone. 2. Before starting, wash your hands and face, then stand still for five slow breaths, remembering Krishna or whatever name you keep. 3. Check that you know how to do the task. If not, find out first. 4. Do it slowly and cleanly, with no shortcuts. 5. When it is finished, say quietly, "This is for you." Notice whether the task felt different.

A woman is about to cook the first meal after her father's funeral. Relatives are in the house and her hands are unsteady. The verse speaks to that moment in order. First she washes her hands and stands a minute, remembering Krishna, so that she is steady before she begins. Then she makes the dishes she actually knows how to make, not an untried recipe on a hard day. She keeps the kitchen and the food clean. When the plate is ready, she offers the first portion to Krishna before anyone eats. Ordinary experience agrees on much of this: a steadied person makes fewer mistakes, clean hands matter in a kitchen, and a known recipe is safer than a guess. The text's own claim, that remembering Krishna purifies the self and that offering completes the act, is its teaching and stands as such. The limit is plain. None of this lessens her grief or brings her father back. It only gives the day a shape she can carry without the work going wrong.
