Nothing Lower to Fall
Bhagavata Purana 11.21.16
Meaning · English
Sometimes a virtue becomes a fault, and by the right ordering a fault becomes a virtue. The fixed rule about virtue and fault serves only to cut apart the two. For the fallen, doing the same deeds as their fellows is no sin. Attachment to company is a quality born with a person. One who lies on the ground falls no lower.
Three words carry the verse. Guna is a good quality, a virtue. Dosha is a fault, literally a flaw or stain. Patita, from the root pat, to fall, means one already fallen. Krishna tells Uddhava that virtue and fault are not fixed labels on acts. An act that counts as a virtue in one setting can be a fault in another, and the reverse is also true. He then says the settled rule about guna and dosha does one job: it separates the two, so that they do not blur into each other. The commentators take it as an ordering that keeps the difference clear, not a claim that every act is good or bad in itself. Next he says the fallen incur no new sin by doing what their fellows do. Their acts match the level they already stand on. Then comes sanga, attachment or association, which Krishna calls a quality born with a person. Someone lying on the ground has no further to drop. The point comes in the middle of Krishna's teaching on what makes things pure or impure. Place, time and person all change the verdict, so no list of acts can be read off flatly. The verse asks the listener to judge by where a person stands and to see how strongly company pulls.
A man lying on the floor of a hut cannot tumble down the stairs, while one standing on the top step can. A fall is measured from where a person stands. The fallen and the one at the edge sit at different heights, so the same act weighs differently on each.
1. Tonight, pick one habit you call a virtue, such as always being first or always saying yes. Ask where it would turn into a fault. 2. Choose one habit you share with the people you spend most time with. Notice how much of it is yours and how much is theirs. 3. After your next small slip this week, stop at the one. Ask only what stood nearest to you when it happened.
A man sits on his kitchen floor late at night, the cigarette packet beside him, after breaking a month without smoking. His first thought is that the month was wasted and he may as well finish the pack. The verse speaks to that moment. Krishna's words, as the text gives them, say that virtue and fault shift with their setting, that sanga, attachment to company, is born in a person, and that one lying down falls no lower. Step by step: he looks at what stood close when the slip came, which was a friend's cigarette on a balcony, not a flaw of his whole character. He sees the lapse as one act, not a verdict on the month. He puts the packet out of reach. Ordinary experience confirms that shame after a slip makes the next slip likelier, and that habits follow the company kept. The verse does not say the slip is harmless, and it does not replace a doctor or a support group where the habit has real hold.
