Turning Away Frees
Bhagavata Purana 11.21.18
Meaning · English
From whatever a person turns away, from that very thing he is set free. This is dharma for human beings: it is their safety, and it takes away grief, bewilderment and fear.
Three words carry the teaching. Nivarteta means to turn back, from ni and vrit, to turn. Vimucyeta means to be loosed or released, from muc, to let go. Kshema means safety, a secure keeping, the state of having what you have without fear of losing it. Krishna's sentence is simple. Wherever you turn away from a hold, you are freed from that hold. The freedom comes at the exact place where you turned, not somewhere else. A person freed from one bond is not yet freed from all, so the turning is repeated, bond by bond. Then he names dharma. Dharma, from dhri, to hold up, is what supports a life. Here it is this very turning. He says it is people's safety, and that it removes three things: shoka, grief; moha, bewilderment; and bhaya, fear. All three grow from clinging to something that can be lost or can change. Krishna gives it here because he has been sorting right from wrong by place, time and person. Rules of that kind could leave Uddhava asking what the rules are for. This is the answer: they serve loosening. He asks the listener to look at where the grip is tightest, and to see that turning away from it is the practice itself.
A boat is tied to the dock with several ropes, and it jerks and groans with every wave. Someone unties one rope, then another, and the boat begins to ride the water easily. The ropes are the bonds, and the jerking is grief and fear.
1. Tonight, sit for two minutes and name one thing you keep reaching for that leaves you more restless afterward: a message thread, a worry, a grudge. 2. Tomorrow, each time you feel the reach, turn away on purpose for ten minutes. Put the phone in another room, or walk to a window. 3. Afterward, notice whether the grip has loosened, even slightly. 4. Keep to that one thing for a week before choosing another.
Meera, a retired schoolteacher, stands in her kitchen at dusk. The family chat on her phone has been buzzing all afternoon over a property quarrel. Her jaw is tight and she has read the same message four times, composing a reply. The teaching asks her to find the exact thing she is gripping. It is not the family. It is the chat, and the need to win the last word. She turns away from that single thing: the phone goes face down in another room, and she stirs the dal. She does not stop loving her relatives or abandon the matter. She loosens one bond, and the verse promises that the loosening happens at that very place. The pounding quiets a little, and the fear of what they think of her and the confusion about what to say lose some force. Ordinary experience agrees that a heated quarrel cools when you leave the room. The limit is plain. Turning away does not settle the property, undo the hurt, or take away grief for a family that is drifting apart. Where a worry has become sleeplessness or constant dread, a doctor is the right person to see.
