Meaning · English
From dwelling on sense objects and laying qualities upon them, a person forms attachment. From attachment, desire is born. From desire, quarrel arises among people. From quarrel comes anger, hard to bear, and darkness follows close behind anger. By darkness a person is swallowed, and the awareness that pervades him is quickly seized.
Krishna lays out a chain, each link causing the next. A few words carry it. Guna-adhyasa means laying qualities over a thing: the mind paints charm and worth onto an object, which then looks more than it is. Sanga, from the root for sticking, is the clinging that follows. Kama is desire, the pull toward what has been so painted. Kali is quarrel, because two people who want the same thing, or one who is denied, fall into conflict. Krodha is anger, and tamas is darkness, a heavy dullness in which nothing is seen clearly. Chetana is awareness, the knowing that runs through a whole person. So the order is: painting qualities, sticking, wanting, quarrelling, rage, blindness, and finally awareness itself swallowed. The commentators read this as a ladder of cause where every rung produces the next. Krishna teaches it just after telling Uddhava to turn away from whatever binds him. This answers the plain question behind that advice: why turn away at all? Because the fall begins with something small and ends with the loss of the very faculty that could stop it. What it asks of the listener is to notice the first rung, while a stop is still easy.
A loose thread snags on a sweater. A small tug seems harmless, but each pull draws out more, until the sleeve is a heap of yarn. The snag is the first clinging to an object. The unravelling is desire, quarrel and anger, each pulling on the last, until the whole garment of awareness is undone.
1. Today, when you notice a wanting, such as a purchase, a snack or a remark you long to make, stop and name the quality your mind has added to it. 2. Ask once: is that quality in the thing, or in my picture of it? 3. If you feel irritation rising, trace it back one step to the wanting that sits beneath it. 4. Do this for one day and keep a short note of what you found.
A young man stands at his cousin's wedding, looking at the new motorbike parked outside. He has been admiring it all evening. By midnight he is certain it should have been his, since his uncle once promised him something. He brings it up with his brother over dinner, and the talk turns sharp. Words fly, and neither of them hears the other. The verse would slow this at the earliest point. He would see that the bike has been given a glow, a picture of himself on it, which the metal does not hold. Then the wanting is only a wanting, and not yet a grievance. Ordinary experience confirms the end of the chain: a person in a rage cannot weigh what he says. The verse does not promise that wanting will cease, that the brothers' real dispute, if there is one, will settle itself, or that anger will never rise. It only points to where the grip first forms.
