Without that awareness, good man, a person comes to nothing. Then he loses his own true good, like one who has fainted or one who has died. Sunk in sense objects, he knows neither himself nor another. He lives the way a tree lives, in vain, breathing like a bellows.

Krishna is speaking to Uddhava, whom he calls sadhu, a good man. The awareness he means is the one that verse 19 says tamas swallows. The commentators take it so. Three words carry the verse. Svartha is sva, one's own, and artha, aim: one's own true good. Murcchita means fainted, a person whose mind has gone dim though the body stays. Vishaya is a sense object, the thing the senses range over. Krishna says that without awareness a person becomes shunya, an empty thing. The loss is of his own true good, as it is for someone in a faint or someone dead. Absorbed in sense objects, he knows neither himself nor anyone else. He lives as a tree lives, drawing on what is around him, and breathes in and out like a smith's bellows, which moves air and knows nothing of the fire. The comparison is not an insult. It describes a life that runs on without anyone present in it. Krishna places this at the end of his account of how attachment grows into anger and then into dullness. He wants Uddhava to see what the end of that road is, so that turning back from it makes sense. The teaching asks the listener to notice whether they are present in their own days.

A ceiling fan turns all night in a locked, empty room. It stirs the air, hums and keeps its rhythm, but no one is there to feel the breeze. A life lived without awareness is like that: the breath goes on and the days move, with nobody inside to receive them.

1. Pick one ordinary act today, such as drinking your morning tea or washing a pan, and stay with it for five minutes. Keep phone and radio off. 2. When your mind drifts, note where it went, then return to the cup or the water. 3. In the evening, ask yourself once: where did I go through the day without being present? Just notice the answer.

A man drives home on the highway after a long day. He pulls into his lane, and he cannot remember the last twenty minutes of road. His hands drove and his eyes read the signs, but he was somewhere else, caught in a worry. The verse speaks to that moment. Krishna's teaching is that a life lived only among sense objects, with awareness gone dim, is a life barely lived. In the car, the first step is to see the gap: the body is working and the person is not there. The second is to name what pulled him away, the worry or the craving for rest. The third is to bring attention back to the wheel and the road, and to the evening ahead, including the people waiting at home. Ordinary experience confirms that absent-minded hours leave nothing behind to remember. The verse does not promise that attention will lift the worry, or that tiredness can be argued away. A tired driver who keeps drifting needs rest, and the teaching does not replace it.
