This listing of rewards is not the highest good for people. It is a taste laid on the bitter thing, spoken because Krishna wants them to reach what is truly good, as honey is added to medicine so that it will be swallowed. From birth, mortals cling in mind to pleasures, to the breath of life, and to their own people, and these are the very causes of their own ruin. They do not know their true aim. They wander a road of suffering and sin. How could a wise person push them back toward those same things, when they are already entering darkness?

Krishna is explaining why the Veda is full of promises: heaven, sons, cattle, long life. Three words carry it. Phalashruti is the 'hearing of fruits', the passages that announce rewards. Shreyas is what is truly good for a person, as opposed to what is merely pleasant. Anartha is harm, literally 'what has no worth'. He tells Uddhava that the list of rewards is not the goal. It is flavour added to medicine, as a parent sweetens a bitter dose for a child. The commentators read this as kindness: the promise is a gentle lure toward the good, not a lie. Then he says who the lure is for. People are born clinging to pleasures, to life itself, and to family, and these attachments end up harming them. They do not know where their real interest lies, so they wander a hard road. Krishna asks a question: what wise person would send them back toward the very things that are leading them into darkness? The answer is that the wise teacher does not push people deeper into craving. The sweet promise is meant to be a first step, and the medicine is the point. This is why it is taught here. Uddhava has been hearing that rituals bring rewards, and Krishna wants him to see the reward as a means. He asks the listener to look past the sweetness to what it is carrying.

A child will not take cough syrup until a spoon of jam goes in beside it. The jam gets the child to open their mouth, but the syrup is what cures the cough. The Veda's rewards are the jam, and the real good is the syrup.

1. Pick one thing you do this week because of a reward, such as a treat after a chore or praise after a task. 2. Before doing it, ask yourself: what is the plain good under this reward? Name it in one sentence. 3. Do the task once with the reward set aside, or put off until afterwards, and notice whether the task still seems worth doing. 4. Tonight, write down what you found. Two lines are enough.

Ravi leaves the cardiologist's clinic with a diet sheet in his hand. On the way home he stops at the sweet shop, as he has done since he was a boy. The pull is old and it is not a decision. The verse would slow the moment. First, it names the pull honestly: the habit is years deep and has a kind of kinship with comfort and family. Second, it separates the reward from the good. The sweet is a small pleasure, and what Ravi actually wants is more years with his people. Third, it asks what a wise friend would do, which is neither to scold him nor to hand him another sweet, but to put the real aim in front of him gently enough that he can take it. Ordinary experience confirms that habits formed early feel like part of us, and that a plain rule alone rarely holds. The verse does not say Ravi will find it easy, and it does not replace his doctor's advice or his medicines. It only gives him a truer question to ask at the shop door.
