Mistaking Flowers for Fruit

Those of poor understanding, who have not grasped what has been settled, speak of the flowery promise of reward. Those who truly know the Veda do not speak so. Full of craving, pitiful, greedy, they take blossoms for fruit. Dazzled by the fire, worn out by its smoke, they do not know their own home.

Three words carry the verse. Phalashruti is the promise of fruit: phala is fruit or result, shruti is what is heard, so it is the Veda's offer of rewards for rites. Kusumita means flowered, in bloom, so the promise is a blossom and not the fruit itself. Svam lokam is one's own world, one's true home. Krishna tells Uddhava that people of poor understanding hear these blossoming promises and take them as the whole point. They have missed what he has just settled, and those who really know the Veda never speak that way. He names them one by one: full of craving, pitiful because they are always short of something, greedy. They hold the flower and call it fruit. The sacrificial fire dazzles them, then its smoke wears them out, and they never find where they belong. Why teach this here? Uddhava has been hearing that the Veda lists heavens and rewards, and he is left asking whether those promises are the goal. Krishna's answer is no. The promise is a blossom on the way to something else, and the real fruit is knowing one's own home. The commentators read that home as the Self, and Krishna's nearness within it. What it asks of the listener is plain: to ask, of any promised reward, whether it is the fruit or only the flower.

A mango tree in spring is covered in pale blossom, and a child who loves the smell stands under it picking handfuls, content, never waiting. The blossom is the Veda's list of rewards. The mango that would come after is the knowing of one's own home.

1. Tonight, pick one thing you have been wanting this week, such as a purchase, a promotion, or an outcome. 2. Write one line on what you hope it will give you underneath: rest, respect, safety, or something else. 3. Sit quietly for two minutes with that line and notice whether the thing itself can give it. 4. Tomorrow, take one small step toward what is underneath, even if it is only a call to a friend.

It is midnight and a woman is scrolling a flash sale. Her cart is full, a banner promises a free gift above a certain total, and a timer is counting down. She is tired and she is not sure she needs any of it. Krishna's teaching would slow this down in three steps. First, she can see the banner as a promise, a blossom held out. Second, she can ask what she is actually after: comfort, a sense of being looked after, relief from a long week. Third, she can ask whether the cart can supply that. Ordinary experience bears out that wanting often runs ahead of the enjoying, and the pleasure of the promise fades faster than the thing bought. The text gives this as Krishna's teaching about craving and where it leaves a person. It does not say the purchase is wrong, and it does not make the craving vanish or the week less tiring. It gives her a question to ask before she presses the button.
