They do not know me, dear friend, who sit in the heart and from whom this world comes. They delight in chanted hymns and recitations, living on nothing but the breath of their own life, like eyes clouded by mist. Not grasping my hidden meaning, their minds are bound to the objects of the senses. If there is a liking for killing, then even in the sacrifice there is no command to it.
Three words carry the verse. Hridistha means seated in the heart: Krishna says he is not far off in heaven but present inside every person, and the world also comes from him. Paroksha means hidden, beyond the reach of the eye. Krishna calls his real intent in the Veda hidden, so a reader who takes only the surface misses it. Vishayatmaka means one whose self is made of sense-objects, someone whose whole attention is already spent on what can be tasted, heard and gained. Krishna tells Uddhava that people who delight in the sound of the hymns, and who live only for their own pleasure and survival, do not know him. Their eyes are like eyes in fog: the light is there, but they cannot see through it. The last line addresses a worry. Some will say the Veda commands animal sacrifice. Krishna says that if a person already has a taste for killing, the sacrifice is no command to kill. The commentators generally read it as a limit placed on appetite that already exists, not a wish of the Veda. Krishna teaches this to answer why so many who follow ritual faithfully still do not reach him. The answer is that they have taken the outer act for its purpose. The verse asks Uddhava to look for the one within, behind the ritual.
On a misty morning a traveller walks past the very house he is looking for, because the fog hides its walls and door. The house stands unchanged beside him. The fog is a mind taken up with pleasures and sounds, and the house is the one already seated in the heart.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes in a quiet room with the phone in another room. 2. Before you begin, name one thing you did today mainly for its pleasure or praise. 3. Sit without chasing the next thing. Notice how the mind reaches outward when nothing is handed to it. 4. Before getting up, say silently, "Someone is here with me in the heart." Then go on with your evening.
A man spends a whole day at his family's festival hall, with rites, loudspeakers, feeding the guests and pleasing relatives. At eleven at night he sits on a step with ringing ears and realises he has not had one quiet minute with himself. The verse speaks to that moment. First it names what has happened: the day's noise and tasks filled the mind so fully that the inner life went unheard. Then it separates the act from its purpose, asking what the day was for. Then it points to what the man can still do on the step: stop reaching outward and be still for a few minutes. Ordinary experience confirms that a crowded, noisy mind hears little of its own quiet. The verse does not promise that this stillness will arrive quickly or feel pleasant. It does not take away the tiredness, the family's expectations or the duties of the next morning. It says only that the one within is present even when the fog is thick.
