Meaning · English

Cruel people, fond of harm, kill animals in sacrifice and offer them to the gods, the ancestors and the lords of spirits, all for their own pleasure. They hold in the heart the blessings they hope for, a world like a dream, not truly there, sweet only to hear about. They part with their wealth the way a merchant does, giving up one thing for the sake of another.

Three words carry this. Yajna is sacrifice or offering, from yaj, to worship and to give. Asat means not truly existing, not lasting. Vanik is a merchant, a trader. Krishna tells Uddhava that some people kill animals in rites for the gods, the ancestors and the spirit-lords. They do it for their own pleasure and enjoy the harm. Their offering is a purchase, not a gift. They keep the blessings they want fixed in the heart, such as heaven, rank and comfort. Krishna calls that world dreamlike. A dream feels solid while it lasts and leaves nothing behind. He also says it is sweet only to the ear, because its charm lies in the description and not in anything found. The merchant comparison is exact. A trader hands over goods only because he expects more back. The commentators take this as the point: the giving is real, but the heart is counting. Krishna raises this because the Veda's promises of heaven were just discussed, and Uddhava needs to see how they get misused. The worship is aimed at the wrong thing. Krishna asks Uddhava to notice what an offering is for, and who gets hurt by it.

A man pays a deposit for a flat shown in a glossy brochure. The picture is lovely, but nobody has bought the land. He is paying for the picture. The offerer pays for a heaven he has only heard described, and that heaven, like the picture, is not there to move into.

1. Today, before you give something (money, a favour, time), stop for ten seconds and ask yourself what you hope to get back. 2. If an answer comes, such as thanks, a return favour or a better standing, simply name it silently. Do not argue with it. 3. Once this week, give something small where no one will ever know, and notice how it feels different.

A woman stands at a roadside shrine the morning of a job interview. She promises a large offering if she gets the post, and she names the amount. Krishna's words ask what that promise really is. It is a bargain: payment now, result later. Seeing that, she might still pray, but she would know she is pricing a wish and not simply giving. She might then ask what she would offer even if the answer were no. She might also notice that the hoped-for result lives in her imagination, vivid and pleasant, while the actual day is still unwritten. Ordinary experience agrees that a gift with a price tag leaves the giver watching the other side, anxious and keeping accounts. The teaching does not say she will get the job, or that wanting it is shameful. It does not tell her how the interview will go. It speaks only of the giving, and of what it is for. Its warning about killing animals for pleasure is the text's own and stands as its teaching.
