Old Horse Nobody Wants
Rig Veda 10.34.3
Meaning · English
Her mother loathes me; my wife bars the door. I beg, and find no one kind. A gambler, like an old horse for sale, is worth nothing to me.
The gambler's home has closed against him. His wife's mother hates him, and his wife keeps him out. When he goes around asking for money, no one will ease his trouble with a gift or a loan. The last line says what he has become: an aged horse put up for sale, of no further use to anyone. The older translation gives these words to the people around him. Sāyaṇa hears the gambler judging himself.
A wristwatch sits in a pawnshop window with a paper tag tied to its strap. Someone once wore it every day and checked it every hour. Now it is only a number on a tag. The gambler sees himself that way. He is no longer a husband or a son-in-law. He is an object valued only for what it will fetch.
