Meaning · English
Others paw at the wife of the man whose wealth the mighty die has craved. Father, mother, brothers say: 'We do not know him. Bind him, lead him off.'
The die is pictured as a strong rival with an appetite for the gambler's money. Sāyaṇa reads that word as 'mighty'; other readers take it as 'winning'. Once the die has fed, the ruin spreads. Other men lay rough hands on his wife. Sāyaṇa names them as rival gamblers, pulling at her clothes and hair as if she were part of the stake. When the winners come to bind him, his parents and brothers deny they know him. The loss is never his alone, and those closest to him cut him loose.
A car being towed for unpaid loans. The chain goes on, the neighbours watch, and the owner's brother stands on the porch telling the driver it has nothing to do with him. The debt reaches the whole household, and the family protects itself by stepping back from the man who ran it up.
