यदादीध्ये न दविषाण्येभिः परायद्भ्योऽव हीये सखिभ्यः। न्युप्ताश्च बभ्रवो वाचमक्रतँ एमीदेषां निष्कृतं जारिणीव

Meaning · English

I resolve, 'I won't play with them,' and stay behind as friends leave. The brown dice fall and speak, and I go to their haunt like a woman to her lover.

The gambler makes a clear decision: he will not play. His fellow gamblers head off to the board, and he stays put. The decision lasts only until the brown dice are thrown down and make their sound. Then he goes, the way a woman slips off to meet a lover in secret. The comparison carries both pull and shame. Sāyaṇa allows that 'I will not play' may also mean 'I will not let them torment me'. Either way, the promise breaks.

A man who quit smoking waits at a bus stop. Someone nearby flicks a lighter, and the small scratch and hiss reach him before any smell does. His hand is already in his pocket, feeling for a packet he no longer carries. The trigger is a sound, and the body answers before the decision can.

मैं ठान लेता हूँ, 'मैं इनके साथ नहीं खेलूँगा,' और मित्रों के जाते समय पीछे रह जाता हूँ। भूरे पासे गिरकर बोल उठते हैं, और मैं उनके अड्डे की ओर वैसे ही चल पड़ता हूँ जैसे कोई स्त्री अपने प्रेमी के पास जाती है।

जुआरी स्पष्ट निश्चय करता है कि वह नहीं खेलेगा। उसके साथी जुआरी बिसात की ओर चल देते हैं, और वह अपनी जगह टिका रहता है। यह निश्चय तभी तक टिकता है जब तक भूरे पासे फेंके जाकर अपनी आवाज़ नहीं करते। फिर वह चल पड़ता है, जैसे कोई स्त्री चुपके से अपने प्रेमी से मिलने निकल जाती है। इस उपमा में खिंचाव भी है और लज्जा भी। सायण के अनुसार 'मैं नहीं खेलूँगा' का अर्थ 'मैं उन्हें स्वयं को सताने नहीं दूँगा' भी हो सकता है। दोनों ही तरह से प्रतिज्ञा टूट जाती है।

धूम्रपान छोड़ चुका एक आदमी बस अड्डे पर प्रतीक्षा कर रहा है। पास में कोई लाइटर जलाता है, और गंध से पहले ही वह छोटी-सी रगड़ और फुस्स की आवाज़ उस तक पहुँच जाती है। उसका हाथ पहले से ही जेब में है, उस पैकेट को टटोलता हुआ जिसे वह अब साथ नहीं रखता। उकसाने वाली चीज़ एक ध्वनि है, और निर्णय से पहले ही शरीर उत्तर दे देता है।
