Hope at the Gaming Table

Rig Veda 10.34.6

Meaning · English

The gambler heads for the hall, asking, "Will I win?" his body burning. The dice cut across his desire, setting the winning throws before his opponent.

The gambler walks into the gaming hall already asking whether today is his day. Sāyaṇa has him asking who at the table is rich enough to beat. His body is lit up, hot with expectation. Then the dice take over. Older readers say they run against what he wants. Sāyaṇa reads the same word as the dice feeding his craving. Either way, the best throws, the ones that take a round, keep landing for the player across from him.

Picture a man at a fairground claw machine, coins warm in his palm, sure this time the claw will hold. It lifts the prize, sways, and drops it at the edge again. The hope belongs to him; the result belongs to the machine. So with the dice: the fever is his, the winning throws go elsewhere.
