The Mystery of the Many Krishnas

Bhagavata Purana 10.13 · read aloud in the app

The story · English

One day, Krishna led the young cowherds to a beautiful riverbank. The sand was soft, and the air was filled with the fragrance of blooming flowers and the echoing songs of birds in the trees. Krishna told his friends, 'This is the perfect place for us to eat while we are hungry. Let the calves drink their fill of water and graze slowly on the grass.' After the calves were watered, the boys penned them on a grassy spot, opened their lunch bundles and ate with Krishna. They sat in the forest in rings around him, all facing him like petals around the centre of a lotus, laughing and sharing their meals. Some made plates of flowers, leaves and sprouts, others of fruits, bark and stones, each boy happily showing the others what he had brought to eat.

Krishna stood in the middle of his friends, his flute tucked into his waistband at his belly and his horn and cane under his left arm. In his left hand he held a soft morsel of food, with fruits between his fingers. He kept everyone laughing with his jokes, looking for all the world like a simple child at play. But while they ate, the calves wandered deep into the forest in search of greener grass. The boys grew frightened, and Krishna told them, 'Friends, do not stop eating. I will bring the calves here.' With the morsel still in his hand, Krishna searched through the dense thickets and groves to find the missing animals.

Suddenly, Brahma, the creator, decided to witness the divine nature of Krishna. Using his mystic power, Brahma spirited away the calves and the cowherd boys to another location. When Krishna could not find the calves, he returned to the riverbank, found his friends gone too, and searched the forest for both. Knower of all, he understood at once that this was all Brahma's doing. To delight the boys' and calves' mothers, and Brahma too, Krishna performed a miracle: he became the calves and the boys himself. Each form matched a missing boy or calf exactly, in body, stick, horn, flute, clothes, name, age and habits, and as each boy he led each calf to its own pen and entered that boy's home.

For a whole year, these many Krishnas lived in Vraja. Each went into his own home, where the mothers ran at the sound of the flute and nursed their sons with milk, sweet as nectar, that flowed from love. Every day they played in the forest, and each evening the cows hurried to the pens, lowing, to nurse their own calves, who were Krishna. Near the year's end, cows grazing on Govardhana saw the calves far off and ran down to them in love; the angry cowherds who chased them found their own sons there, and their anger melted into embraces. Balarama saw this growing love and wondered, 'Is this some divine trick, or is it the maya of my Lord?' With inner sight he saw that all were Krishna, and Krishna explained.

Brahma returned after a moment of his own time to find a year gone on earth and Krishna playing with the boys and calves as before. He could not tell which were real, those asleep under his maya or these; trying to bewilder Vishnu, he was bewildered by his own maya. Then all the boys and calves appeared as countless forms of the Supreme Lord, dark-complexioned, wearing yellow silk, holding the shankha, chakra, gada, and lotus. Brahma stood stunned, like a doll. Then Krishna drew back the veil of maya, and Brahma saw Vrindavana, and Krishna alone, a cowherd child searching for his calves and friends, morsel in hand. He came down from his swan and fell at his feet, his eyes streaming with tears. He bowed low, trembling with devotion, fully realizing the magnificent nature of the Lord he had tried to bewilder.
