The Divine Play in Vraja

The story · English

Lord Brahmā gazed upon the young boy Krishna, who stood there with the skin of a cloud and a garment bright as lightning. He wore a crown of peacock feathers and a garland of forest flowers, holding a morsel of food in his hand, with his cane, horn and flute. Brahmā was overwhelmed. He realized that this child was the Supreme Soul, the one who exists beyond the material world. He saw that while many yogis strive through intense effort to understand the truth, those who simply offer their devotion to Krishna find the path far easier. Brahmā bowed low, recognizing that the entire universe is but a dream or a mirage compared to the eternal joy found in the Infinite.

In his prayer, Brahmā confessed his ignorance. Blinded by pride as the unborn creator, he had spread his own maya over the Lord, the master of all maya, to see his glory, though he was no more than a spark before a fire. He had hidden the calves and the boys, only to see Krishna become every boy and calf, and then each of them a four-armed form, worshipped by Brahmā himself. He marveled that the witness of all worlds, who holds the whole cosmos within his belly, had chosen to appear as a simple child in Vraja. Brahmā asked forgiveness for this, acknowledging that only by the grace of the Lord's lotus feet can one truly cross the ocean of existence.

Brahmā looked at Vraja—the cows, the cowherd women and the children—and praised their fortune. He thought, 'How lucky are the residents of Nanda's village! They drink the nectar of the Lord's presence every day.' He wished to be born there, even as a blade of grass bathed in the dust of their feet. He felt that his own position as a high deity was insignificant compared to the simple love shared between Krishna and his friends. After offering his deepest praises and circling the Lord three times, Brahmā took leave and returned to his own celestial abode, leaving the young Krishna to continue his playful pastimes among the calves and the forests.

Once Brahmā departed, Krishna brought the calves Brahmā had hidden back to the riverbank where his friends sat. A whole year had passed, but the boys, bewildered by Krishna's maya, thought it had been half a moment. His friends welcomed him back with great joy, shouting, 'Welcome, Krishna! You came back so quickly; not one morsel has been eaten! Come, eat with us!' Laughing, Krishna ate with them. Then, showing them the skin of the dead python, he returned home to Vraja with his flute, his body adorned with various ornaments. The boys sang in Vraja, 'Today the son of Yashoda and Nanda killed a great serpent and saved us from it!'

King Parikshit later asked how the people of Vraja could love Krishna, another's son, more than they had ever loved their own sons. Suka answered that every living being holds its own self dearest, and loves sons and wealth only because of the self. Krishna is the Soul of all souls, and so the dearest of all. For those who take shelter of his feet, the ocean of existence becomes as small as a calf's hoof-print. Through these childhood plays in Vraja, the Lord reveals that the entire universe is a manifestation of his divine nature.
