The story · English

In the sacred lands of Vrindavan, the young Krishna and Balarāma lived as simple cowherds. Krishna, the primordial being, would lead the cows into the flower-filled forests, playing his flute while the cowherd boys sang of his glory. He loved the nature around him—the way the lotus-scented breeze blew. Smiling, he praised his elder brother Balarāma: the trees, he said, bowed their flowering tops to touch Balarāma's feet, and the deer and birds danced and sang as if welcoming a dear friend home. To the world, he appeared as a village boy, laughing and playing, sometimes massaging the feet of Balarāma when he lay tired from play with his head on a cowherd boy's lap, or himself resting under the shade of a tree while others fanned him.

One day, Śrīdāma, Subala, Stoka-Krishna and other cowherd boys spoke to Krishna and Balarāma. 'Rama, Krishna, there is a great forest of palm trees nearby,' they said. 'The trees are heavy with ripe fruits, and the air is fragrant with their scent. But a cruel demon named Dhenuka, who looks like a donkey, guards them with many kinsmen as strong as he. He is so violent that the people, the birds, and the animals all avoid the place. We long to taste those fruits. If you wish, please come with us and help us gather them.' Laughing at their friends' request, the two brothers agreed, and the group set off toward the palm grove.

Once they arrived, Balarāma stepped forward. With the strength of an elephant, he gripped the palm trees and shook them violently, sending a rain of ripe fruits crashing to the ground. Hearing the noise, Dhenuka the demon charged forward, making the earth tremble. Enraged, the demon kicked Balarāma in the chest with his hind legs, then turned and kicked him again. But Balarāma caught the demon by his hooves with one hand and whirled him around until he died, then hurled the lifeless body onto the top of a palm tree. The great palm broke and toppled the next, and that one the next, and all the palms swayed as if in a great wind.

Dhenuka's relatives rushed to the scene to avenge him, but Krishna and Balarāma dealt with them in the same manner. They seized the demons and tossed them atop the palm trees until the grove was filled with the bodies of the asses and the ground was covered in fruit. The demigods showered flowers and sang their praise. With the demon's clan gone, the humans finally ate the palm fruits and the cattle grazed freely in the forest. After this, Krishna returned to the village with his elder brother, greeted by the women of Vrindavan. At home their mothers, Yashoda and Rohini, bathed and dressed both sons, fed them, and laid them in a soft bed, where they slept peacefully.

Later, Krishna went without Balarāma to the banks of the river Kalindī with his friends. There, driven by an unbearable thirst, the cows and cowherds drank from the water, unaware that it had been poisoned. One by one, they collapsed and fell lifeless upon the riverbank. Seeing his beloved companions in this state, Krishna, the Lord of Yoga, looked upon them with a gaze of nectar. By his mere sight, he brought the dead back to life. The cowherds woke up astonished and looked at one another, and they understood that after drinking the poison and dying, they had risen again by the merciful glance of Govinda.
