Charity Without Respect
Bhagavad Gita 17.22
Meaning · English
Charity given at the wrong place and the wrong time, to unworthy persons, without respect and with contempt, is held to be of the nature of nescience.
Four ideas carry this. Patra means a vessel, a cup, so apatra is a receiver who cannot hold the gift or will spill it. Tamasa comes from tamas, the quality of darkness and dullness, where nothing is seen clearly. Asat-kritam means done as if the person were nothing, with no welcome. Avajnata means known as small, treated with contempt. Krishna tells Arjuna that a gift made in the wrong place, at the wrong time, to the wrong person, and handed over with disrespect, belongs to this dark quality. Just before, he named the clear gift (17.20) and the gift that wants something back (17.21). Here he finishes the set with the gift made without looking. The giver has not asked where, when or to whom, and does not care how it lands. The text's concern is that a gift can leave the hand and still fail, because attention was missing and the receiver was lowered. Shankara reads the lack of respect as missing kind words, a seat offered, water for the feet. Ramanuja and Madhva also treat it as the dull, unseeing gift, the lowest of the three.
Someone walks past a thirsty plant at night, flings a jug of water from the doorway, and leaves. The pot cracks, the soil washes out, the stem bends. The water was real, but nobody looked. The gift is the water, and the dark quality is the carelessness of the throw.
1. Today, when you hand anything to anyone, a coin, a plate, a favour, pause one breath first and look at the person's face. 2. Say one plain word of welcome as you give, such as thank you for taking it, or sit, please. 3. Before agreeing to give money or help this week, ask yourself three quick questions: is this the right moment, is this the right person, and can I do it without contempt? Notice what changes in how you give.
A woman comes off a late shift and waits at a bus stop at eleven at night. A man asks for change. Tired and wary, she shoves some coins toward him without turning her head and walks off feeling vaguely worse. Krishna's list would slow that moment in small steps. She would notice the hour and place, which are not ideal, and that is allowed; the text names them as conditions to weigh. She would notice she has not looked at him. A glance and a plain word cost nothing and change what the gift is. If the moment is unsafe, she may decide not to give there, and give later where she can do it with care. Ordinary experience agrees that tiredness makes people curt. The teaching does not promise that the man will be helped, or that her worry about him will end. It says only that the manner of a gift is part of the gift.
