Faithless Giving Is Hollow

Meaning · English
Whatever is offered in sacrifice, given in charity, or practiced as penance without faith, Arjun, is called perishable. Whatever is done that way counts for nothing in the next world, and nothing in this one.
Three words carry this. Shraddha means faith, but its root sense is placing the heart on something. Without it, an act is aśraddhā: done with the hands and not the heart. Asat is the opposite of sat, the word Krishna has just praised. It means what does not last, what has no real footing. Pretya means having departed, so the next world. Iha means here, this world. Krishna names three acts: sacrifice, charity and penance. Done without faith, they are called asat. They bring nothing after death and nothing now. The outward act can be perfect. The offering is made, the coin given, the fast kept. Krishna says the missing inner part is what made it count. The reason follows from the verses before. Sat is goodness and steadiness, and an act done without faith has no steadiness in it. It is only a performance. Shankara reads faith as trust in the scripture and the teacher. Ramanuja stresses acts done with devotion, as prescribed. Madhva likewise holds that acts without faith in the Lord bear no fruit. The verse asks the listener to bring the heart along with the hands.
A bucket with a hole in the bottom. You fill it at the well, carry it the whole way, and the effort is real. At the field there is almost nothing left to pour. The bucket is the sacrifice, the gift or the fast. The hole is missing faith, and the water is the fruit.
1. Pick one small act you do on habit today, such as giving food, money or time to someone, or a daily prayer. 2. Before you do it, stop for ten seconds. Ask yourself why you are doing it, and let one honest reason come. 3. While you do it, put the phone away and keep your attention on the act or the person. 4. That evening, note in one line whether it felt different from the usual way.
A man stands at his father's yearly remembrance rites. His lips move through the words while his thumb checks messages. The priest finishes, and he realises he remembers none of it. Krishna's verse speaks to that moment. First, the man sees that the act was done and the heart was elsewhere. Next, he can pause, put the phone away and do the last part again slowly, with his father's face in mind. Then he can choose one small thing, like telling a sibling a story about his father. The text teaches that an act of this kind is empty without faith, and that faith is what gives the act weight. Ordinary experience agrees on one point. A gift handed over while the giver is distracted is felt as hollow by the person receiving it. The verse does not promise that attention will lift grief, or that a single sincere act will repair what was neglected for years. It also does not replace a doctor if the distraction comes from exhaustion or low mood that needs care.
