Steadiness and Supporting Work

Bhagavad Gita 17.27

Meaning · English

Steadiness in sacrifice, in penance and in charity is also called Sat. And action done for the sake of such purposes is likewise described, indeed, as Sat.

Two words carry the weight. Sthiti means standing, being established, a firm footing. Tat-arthiya means for the sake of that, or for such purposes. The first clause says that staying steady in sacrifice, penance and charity is itself called Sat. The act of giving is not the only thing that earns the name. The staying power behind it earns it too. The second clause reaches further. Action that serves those three, the cooking, the earning, the carrying and the arranging, is also called Sat. Krishna has just said Sat names existence, goodness and auspicious action. Here he closes a gap. Most of a devout life is not the grand act. It is the long, plain work that makes the act possible and the habit of not giving up. The text says that work belongs in the same circle. Shankara reads the purpose as the Supreme, so the action is done for God's sake. Ramanuja reads it as action that serves the Lord. Madhva reads it as action done to please Vishnu. All three agree the aim decides the name, and that a steady footing counts as much as a single deed.

A woman chops onions for three hours before a community meal. The ladling at the end gets the thanks, but the chopping was part of the feast. In the same way, the steady habit and the small supporting tasks belong to the offering itself.

1. Pick one small giving habit you already have, such as a weekly call to an elderly relative, a daily handful of grain for birds, or a regular donation. Keep it this week at the same time each day. 2. Name one plain chore that makes it possible, such as cooking, travelling or setting aside the money. Do it today with the same care as the giving. 3. Tonight, note whether you stayed with it when you felt tired or bored.

A grandmother at a community kitchen has been peeling onions since noon. By late afternoon her eyes sting and she wonders whether this counts for anything beside the people who will serve the meal. The verse answers her directly. Her steadiness counts, and so does the peeling, because both are for the same purpose as the serving. She can then stop ranking the jobs. She can do the peeling as part of the meal, and finish it without waiting for thanks. Ordinary experience confirms that a modest habit kept every week is easier to carry on than a large effort made once and dropped. The verse does not promise that the work will feel meaningful in the moment. It does not remove the tiredness or the stinging eyes, and it does not replace rest, or a doctor if the work is wearing her down.
