Sat: Goodness Named Aloud
Bhagavad Gita 17.26
सद्भावे साधुभावे च सदित्येतत्प्रयुज्यते।प्रशस्ते कर्मणि तथा सच्छब्दः पार्थ युज्यते
Meaning · English
Sat is used for the intention toward lasting existence and goodness, and for the intention that is auspicious. Likewise, Arjun, son of Pritha, the word Sat is used for an action that is praiseworthy and auspicious.
Two words carry the verse. Sat comes from the root for 'to be', so it means what is real, what lasts, and by extension what is good. Bhava means a state of mind or an intention, the inner stance behind an act. Prashasta means praised, auspicious, worth approving. Krishna tells Arjuna that the syllable Sat is spoken in two places. First, it names an intention: one aimed at what truly exists and what is good, and one that is sadhu, meaning decent and well-meant. Second, it names an action: any deed that is auspicious and worthy of praise. So Sat covers both ends of an act, the motive behind it and the deed itself. The reason sits in the surrounding verses. Krishna has been giving sacred syllables to the people who perform sacrifice, charity and austerity, so that their acts are offered with the right mind. Here Sat is the syllable for acts and intentions that are sound. It asks the listener to check the inner aim as well as the outer act, and to speak of good work as good only when both hold. Shankara reads Sat here as naming Brahman, the real, so that a good act is joined to it. Ramanuja reads it as pointing to the Lord, whom good acts are meant to please. Madhva stresses that the word itself is a name of the Lord, so using it brings His remembrance to the act.
A carpenter runs a hand along a finished table, then tests the legs for wobble. The wood must be sound and the joints true, and only then does he call it good. Sat is that double test: the intention is the timber, the action is the joinery.
1. Pick one task you will do today for someone else, such as a call, a meal or a favour. 2. Before you begin, take ten seconds and ask quietly: what am I really aiming at, and is it decent? 3. Do the task, then spend a minute afterwards asking whether the deed itself was sound and worth doing. 4. Notice any time the aim was good but the act was careless, or the act looked fine but the aim was show.
A pharmacist is about to hand over a prescription at closing time. The queue is long, her feet hurt, and one customer is anxious about a dose. She could hurry and call it done. The verse would have her do two checks. First, the aim: she wants this person to be safe, which is a decent intention. Second, the act: she slows down, explains the dose clearly and confirms it. Both together make the work sound in the verse's sense. A good motive with a careless act can still hurt someone, and a polished act with a hollow motive tends to show in small ways, such as impatience in the voice. Ordinary experience bears out that people sense the difference between care and routine. The verse does not promise that the customer will be grateful, that tiredness will lift, or that a good intention replaces training and double-checking where those are needed. Krishna's teaching is narrower: name as good only what is good in both aim and deed.
