Not Mind, Not Senses

Nirvana Shatakam 1

Meaning · English

I am not mind, intellect, ego or memory; not ears, tongue, nose or eyes; not sky, earth, fire or wind. Awareness and joy, I am Shiva, I am Shiva.

The speaker goes through the things a person usually takes to be 'me' and sets each one down. Mind is the part that thinks and wavers. Intellect is the part that decides. Ego is the sense 'this is me, this is mine.' Memory holds what has been stored up. Then come the senses: ears, tongue, nose, eyes. Then the stuff the world is made of: sky, earth, fire, wind. What is left is named: awareness and joy. That, the speaker says, is Shiva, and that is who I am.

A cinema screen shows a house on fire, then a rainstorm, then a crowded street. When the lights come up, the screen is not scorched or wet. It was never any of those scenes, only the white surface they played on. Thoughts, choices, memories, sights and smells are the scenes. The awareness the hymn points to is the screen.
