Nirvana Shatakam 6

अहं निर्विकल्पो निराकाररूपो विभुत्वाच्च सर्वत्र सर्वेन्द्रियाणाम् । न चासङ्गतं नैव मुक्तिर्न मेयश्चिदानन्दरूपः शिवोऽहं शिवोऽहम्

Meaning · English

I am changeless and formless. Present everywhere, I pervade all the senses. Neither attached nor released, beyond measure: consciousness and joy, I am Shiva, I am Shiva.

Changeless: no shifting thoughts or divisions inside it. Formless: no shape that could be drawn. Because it is everywhere, it runs through every sense instead of sitting behind one. Then three denials. It is not attached to anything. It is not liberation either, as if it had been caught and set loose. And it cannot be measured, since it is never an object standing in front of anyone. What remains is consciousness and joy, and the name Shiva, said twice.

A tape measure gives the width of a room by hooking onto one wall and stretching to the other. It never measures the space itself, which has no shape of its own and carries on through the open door. The self is that space: every sense opens into it, and there is no edge for the tape to catch.

मैं निर्विकार और निराकार हूँ। सर्वत्र उपस्थित, मैं सब इंद्रियों में व्याप्त हूँ। न आसक्त, न मुक्त, माप से परे: चेतना और आनंद, मैं शिव हूँ, मैं शिव हूँ।

निर्विकार: इसके भीतर न बदलते विचार हैं, न कोई बँटवारा। निराकार: कोई ऐसा आकार नहीं जिसकी रेखाएँ खींची जा सकें। क्योंकि यह हर जगह है, यह किसी एक इंद्रिय के पीछे बैठने के बजाय हर इंद्रिय में बहता है। फिर तीन निषेध। यह किसी चीज़ से बँधा नहीं है। यह मुक्ति भी नहीं है, मानो इसे पकड़ा गया हो और फिर छोड़ दिया गया हो। और इसे मापा नहीं जा सकता, क्योंकि यह कभी किसी के सामने खड़ी वस्तु नहीं बनता। जो शेष रहता है वह है चेतना और आनंद, और शिव का नाम, दो बार कहा हुआ।

नापने का फ़ीता एक दीवार में अटककर दूसरी तक खिंचता है और कमरे की चौड़ाई बता देता है। वह उस खाली जगह को ही कभी नहीं नापता, जिसका अपना कोई आकार नहीं और जो खुले दरवाज़े से होकर आगे निकल जाती है। आत्मा वही खाली जगह है: हर इंद्रिय उसी में खुलती है, और वहाँ कोई किनारा नहीं जिसमें फ़ीता अटक सके।
