न मृत्युर्न शङ्का न मे जातिभेदः पिता नैव मे नैव माता न जन्म । न बन्धुर्न मित्रं गुरुर्नैव शिष्यश्चिदानन्दरूपः शिवोऽहं शिवोऽहम्

Meaning · English

No death, no fear, no caste. No father, no mother, no birth. No kin, no friend, no teacher, no student. Awareness and joy, I am Shiva, I am Shiva.

Death and the fear or doubt that shadows it belong to something that can end. What Shankara calls 'I' does not end. Caste is a label placed on a body when it is born. Father, mother and birth are how that body arrived. Kin and friend, teacher and student are roles that link one person to another. All of these are real in daily life, yet none of them is the one who knows them. Set them aside and what is left is plain awareness, and that awareness is full of joy.

At a school play, one spotlight falls on the king, then the beggar, then the mother crying at the door. Costumes change, and characters are born and die in the second act. The lamp above stays the same light throughout. Birth, family, caste and the teacher's chair are the characters. The awareness lighting them is the lamp.

न मृत्यु, न भय, न जाति। न पिता, न माता, न जन्म। न बंधु, न मित्र, न गुरु, न शिष्य। चेतना और आनंद, मैं शिव हूँ, मैं शिव हूँ।

मृत्यु और उसके पीछे चलने वाला भय या संशय उसका है जिसका अंत हो सकता है। शंकर जिसे 'मैं' कहते हैं, उसका अंत नहीं होता। जाति वह नाम है जो जन्म के समय शरीर पर लगा दिया जाता है। पिता, माता और जन्म वह मार्ग हैं जिससे वह शरीर आया। बंधु और मित्र, गुरु और शिष्य वे भूमिकाएँ हैं जो एक व्यक्ति को दूसरे से जोड़ती हैं। ये सब दैनिक जीवन में सच हैं, फिर भी इनमें से कोई भी वह नहीं है जो इन्हें जानता है। इन्हें एक ओर रख दें तो जो बचता है वह केवल चेतना है, और वह चेतना आनंद से भरी है।

विद्यालय के नाटक में एक ही रोशनी पहले राजा पर पड़ती है, फिर भिखारी पर, फिर द्वार पर रोती माँ पर। वेश बदलते हैं, और दूसरे अंक में पात्र जन्म लेते हैं और मर जाते हैं। ऊपर का दीपक पूरे समय वही प्रकाश देता रहता है। जन्म, परिवार, जाति और गुरु का आसन, ये पात्र हैं। इन्हें प्रकाशित करने वाली चेतना वह दीपक है।
