Neither Merit Nor Meal

Nirvana Shatakam 4

Meaning · English

Not merit or sin, pleasure or pain; not mantra, pilgrimage, scripture or sacrifice. Not the eating, the food, or the eater. Consciousness and joy, I am Shiva, I am Shiva.

Good and bad deeds, and the pleasure and pain they bring, belong to someone who acts and collects results. The speaker is not that someone. Worship's tools fall away too: chanted words, holy places, scripture, fire offerings. These are things done, and the speaker is not a thing done. Then one meal is split into three, the eating, the food, the eater, and the speaker is none of them. What remains is awareness and joy, named Shiva.

Picture a lamp over a kitchen table. It lights the plate, the hand lifting the fork, the face of the person chewing. Without it none of that is seen, yet the lamp eats nothing and gains nothing from a good meal or a burnt one. Awareness sits the same way, lighting eater, food and eating while being none of them.
