Meaning · English
By cultivating friendliness toward the happy, compassion toward the suffering, gladness toward the virtuous, and even-minded looking-on toward the wrongdoing, the mind-field grows clear and calm.
Take the words one at a time. Maitri is friendliness, the warmth of a friend. Karuna is compassion, a wish to ease another's pain. Mudita is gladness, a plain delight in someone else's goodness. Upeksha is looking on without being pulled in, an even mind. Bhavana is cultivating: making a thing grow by repeated attention. Citta is the mind-field, and prasadana is making it clear and settled, as mud settles in water. The plain sense: the sutra pairs each attitude with one kind of person. Friendliness goes to the happy, compassion to the suffering, gladness to the virtuous, and evenness to the wrongdoing. Practised in that way, the mind-field becomes clear. Why Patanjali says it: the mind is troubled by other people. Envy rises at the happy, indifference at the suffering, resentment at the good, anger at the wrongdoer. Patanjali offers this as one of the ways to still the mind, and it works on what disturbs the mind in daily life. The classical reading: Vyasa, the oldest commentator, takes the four as settings that cleanse the mind of those stains, so that it becomes clear and can hold steady. The commentators who follow him agree on the main point. They differ mostly on how far evenness toward wrongdoing means distance rather than approval.
Think of a glass of muddy water left on a table. Stir it and it stays cloudy. Leave it alone and the grit sinks, and the water clears. Envy, spite and anger are the stirring. Each of the four attitudes is a way of not stirring when someone else's life touches yours.
1. Pick one person today who is happy about something. Silently wish them well for one minute, and notice whether any envy comes up. 2. When you hear of someone's trouble, stay with it for a breath and wish it eased before you move on. 3. When you see someone do something good, let yourself be glad for a moment, without comparing. 4. When someone does wrong, notice the urge to argue with them in your head. Let it pass without joining it.
