Steadying Through the Breath

Yoga Sutras 1.34

Meaning · English

Or calm may come through the breath: by letting it out in a deliberate, even stream, and by holding it still.

Two words carry this sutra. Pracchardana is a sending out, an expelling. Vidharana is a holding, a keeping steady. Prana is the life-breath, the breath taken as the sign and carrier of life in the body. The word "or" at the start matters. Patanjali offers this as one more way in, beside the others he lists. The plain sense is that the breath can be worked with in two moves. It is sent out in a deliberate, even stream, and then it is held. Patanjali says this settles the mind. The problem it answers is a restless mind that will not take hold of an attitude. The sutra just before it asks for sympathy, compassion and delight, which work through feeling. This one works through the body. It rests on a simple observation. Breath and mind move together, so a smooth breath goes with a smoother mind. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, reads the first word as breath expelled through the nostrils with effort, and the second as holding it, which he calls the control of breath. Later commentators differ on the details of timing and length of the holding. The commentators agree it is a practice of the breath itself, aimed at steadiness of mind.

A pot of water at a rolling boil shakes its lid and rattles. Turn down the flame and the lid settles without anyone touching it. The breath is the flame under the pot. Even out the breath, and the thoughts above it quiet down on their own.

1. Sit upright on a chair or the floor for three minutes, once today, at a quiet hour. 2. Breathe in through the nose in the usual way. Then let the breath out slowly and evenly, a little longer than the breath in. 3. After letting out, rest for a moment before breathing in. Keep it gentle, with no strain. If you feel dizzy or tight, return to ordinary breathing. 4. Notice what your thoughts are doing at the start and at the end.
