Suta told the sages of Naimisha forest that the great sage Narada, having heard him, put a question to Brahma. He said, "Great one, I am never satisfied hearing the stories of Shambhu from your lotus mouth. Tell me the whole of Shiva's story. How was Sati born among Daksha's wives? How did Hara come to take a wife? How did Sati give up her body in Daksha's anger, and return as Himavat's daughter? How did Parvati's severe austerity and her marriage come about? And how did she come to dwell in the half-body of the destroyer of Kama? No one else can cut my doubts as you can." Brahma answered that this story was pure and secret. Shambhu had first told it to Vishnu, his greatest devotee, and Vishnu had told it to Brahma. Now Brahma would tell it.

Brahma explained how things began. Long ago Shiva was without qualities, without form, without his Shakti, pure awareness beyond being and not-being. Then he took on qualities, and became two, the Lord with Shakti. From his left side came Vishnu, from his right Brahma, and from his heart Rudra. Brahma creates, Vishnu protects, Rudra dissolves; Sadashiva is the one who became three. Brahma worshipped him and made all creatures, gods, demons and men. He made the lords of creatures, Daksha first among them, and his mind-born sons: Marichi, Atri, Pulaha, Pulastya, Angiras, Kratu, Vasishtha, Narada, Daksha and Bhrigu. Then from his mind a woman was born, named Sandhya, the evening twilight, murmuring prayers. No one in heaven, on earth or below was her equal. Brahma looked at her and wondered what his mind held.

While Brahma thought this, a marvellous man appeared from his mind. His body shone like gold, his chest was broad, his hair dark and curling, his face like the full moon, his eyes like opened lotus petals. His banner was a fish, his mount a crocodile, and he held a bow of flowers with five flower-arrows. Scented breezes moved around him. Daksha and the other sons stared at him in wonder, and their minds slipped; they lost their steadiness, troubled by desire. The man bowed low to Brahma and said, "What work shall I do? Give me a task, a place of honour, and the wife who is mine." Brahma was struck silent for a moment. Then he steadied his mind, put his wonder aside, and answered.

Brahma said, "With this form and these five flower-arrows, bewilder men and women, and carry on creation without end. All beings, gods and the rest, will be unable to resist you. Even I, Vasudeva, Sthanu and Purushottama will fall under your power, so what of other living things? Enter every heart unseen, be the cause of joy, and keep creation going. The aim of your arrow will always be the delight of the mind, and you will be the one who intoxicates all creatures." Then Brahma looked at his sons' faces and sat a while on his lotus seat. The sages understood his intent and named the man. Because he churns the mind, he would be Manmatha; for desire, Kama; for intoxicating, Madana; for pride, Kandarpa. Daksha would give him a wife. Sandhya, they said, was so named because she was born as Brahma meditated.

Kama took his five flower-arrows, unseen, and thought to himself: this work Brahma has set me, I will do here, before the sages, with Brahma himself as witness. He would test it. He drew the flower bow with care, stood in the archer's stance, and bent it into a circle. Sweet breezes began to blow. He pierced them all, Brahma and the sages, one by one with sharp flower-arrows. Every one of them was shaken. They kept looking at Sandhya, again and again, their desire growing. Brahma saw her too and his senses stirred, and forty-nine feelings rose in his body. Sandhya, struck by Kandarpa's arrows, answered with glances and half-hidden looks, lovely as a river in its ripples. Seeing Brahma and the rest in this state, Kama trusted his work, sure it could be done.

Seeing his father and brothers sink into sin, Dharma remembered Shambhu, protector of dharma, and praised him in distress: "God of gods, Mahadeva, you alone create, preserve and destroy. You are Brahma in creation, Vishnu in keeping, Hara in dissolving, yet beyond all qualities. Protect me from this hard sin. My father and these brothers have wicked minds." Shiva came quickly, appeared in the sky, and laughed at Brahma and the sons. Mocking them, he said, "Brahma, how has desire risen in you at the sight of your own daughter? This is not fitting for those who follow the Veda. Mother, sister, a brother's wife and daughter must never be looked at wrongly. Why did mere desire make you forget this?" Brahma, shamed, broke into a sweat, and let go of his desire.

From the sweat that fell from Brahma's body were born the Agnishvatta ancestors, sixty-four thousand, and the Barhishads, eighty-six thousand. From the sweat of Daksha a lovely woman was born, named Rati, who bewilders even sages. Six of the sages mastered their senses; but the seed of Kratu, Vasishtha, Pulastya and Angiras fell to the earth, and from it came other ancestors, the Somapas, Ajyapas, Kalins and Havishmats. Sandhya became the mother of ancestors, faultless, seen by Shambhu. Then Shiva vanished. Ashamed, Brahma frowned at Kandarpa and said, "You will be burned by the fire of Shiva's eye." Afraid, Kama stepped forward and said, "I only did what you told me. I did no wrong." Brahma said, "You aimed at my daughter. Yet when Hara takes a wife, he himself will give you a body." Brahma vanished. Kama and the sons went home, content.
